College and Covid ~ #BacktoSchool2020 Stress and Anxiety

August of 2020 was always going to be an emotional time for me.  Our older son would head to off to his senior year of college, and our younger son would begin his freshman year...we'd be "empty nesters" for the first time in 21 years.

But I could never have imagined this scenario.  In March, as schools began shutting down, I saw all the plans for college visits for my younger son vanish.  We crossed an entire Spring Break trip of "Accepted Students Day" events off our calendar.  Senior year of high school was a wash, along with all the fun social activities that bond the class, reward their efforts, and create memories.

We made the best choice we could in terms of which school to attend, hoping--perhaps naively--that by summer, things would be better, and visits could at least be made during orientation.

That, of course, didn't happen.  Virtual orientation and trying to register with little guidance was confusing and stressful.

A "Gap Year" for our rising freshman was discussed...again, with very little information to go on.  The constant uncertainty has made every decision fraught with sickening stress...how can we weigh the options, when every single day brings changes?  With travel limited, jobs difficult to come by, and our community college offering online classes only, a Gap Year didn't seem like a good idea.  Just being away from any type of classroom and peer group since March was taking its toll.

We still imagined a college experience with roommates, events, and face-to-face classes in the fall, at that point.  But every day, we took a hit to those expectations.  At the school we chose, he won't be given a roommate, there won't be live events to help freshmen connect and socialize, and most classes are now online.  The fatigue of constantly waiting for disappointing news has worn us all down, not to mention made us doubt all the decisions we've made since this began.

I'm not trying to compare my stress and sadness to someone who has suffered from Covid, or lost a loved one.  I'm grateful we've remained healthy, and I understand the choices being made by schools are designed to keep the students and staff healthy.  But I can't stop thinking of the mental health costs, the tuition costs compared to the educational experience, the social obstacles, and the loss of important moments and milestones.  And of course I worry about sending my kids at all, during a pandemic.  But I have to trust they will take precautions while also finding a way to make the best of the situation.

The two different colleges our sons are going to are handling things very differently, as they are located in different parts of the country.  And on social media, I see moms of all ages sharing similar news of different counties doing different things, and similar concerns about how they are going to handle their unique situations.

There are no easy choices, and no easy answers.  So I'm sending support to all the parents wrestling with these decisions, and trying to have faith that we've done the best we can, given the circumstances.

Now, back to packing...and then diving into a book, because getting lost in a good story has always been a proven stress reliever for me.  In fact, with the amount of stress I'm feeling, I'm doing two books right now...one on Kindle, and one on Audible as I walk or fold laundry.  If anyone has a recommendation for a page-turning read, I'd love to hear it...we have long car rides ahead in the next few weeks as we step into this new phase of our lives.

Doing my best to take things day-by-day...but getting lost in a
fictional world now and then is a relief!

Guaranteed Happily Ever Afters! Lucky in Love #Romance #Book Fair! #amreading

Right now I think we could all use some Happily Ever After stories, and when writing Romance, that's a requirement of the genre.  I actually think this presents quite a challenge, especially to authors of Romantic Suspense like myself.  I have to work really hard to make readers fear for my characters when on some level, readers of romance know that at least the main characters will survive and be happy...if not "ever after", then at least "for now" (unless it's a series with a sequel to continue the story, but I write standalone novels).

So in addition to vengeful ghosts, murderous villains, and other external dangers, I also throw all sorts of internal conflicts at my characters (for example, emotional obstacles or dark secrets) that they are forced to overcome.  But despite the struggle, the hero and the heroine will get their happy ending!

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm is free with a Kindle Unlimited
subscription! Also available as an audiobook

My latest ghost mystery/romantic suspense has won multiple awards, so I'm thrilled it is resonating with readers and reviewers.  If you like spooky suspense and romance, check out The Haunting of Hillwood Farm.  It's also part of the Lucky in Love Book Fair, and the link to that landing page will showcase some additional Romance novels, from sweet to steamy, in a variety of subgenres (historical, paranormal, contemporary, fantasy, etc.), and many are on sale.  Check out the fair and settle in for some HEAs!

Top #Book of 2019 ~ My 2nd Award arrived! #amreading #paranormal #romance #writerslife #amwriting

A few months ago, I received my first physical writing trophy in the mail...a beautiful solid glass book for winning first place in InD'Tale Magazine's RONE Awards, engraved with my name and The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, my latest ghost mystery/romantic suspense.  Last week, I was thrilled to open an envelope with my second physical award for this title...an award and medal for placing as a Top Read of 2019 at Read Free.ly.  The Haunting of Hillwood Farm actually came in at #2 out of 50 titles...which is an amazing feeling and also the exact same spot that Haunted Souls claimed in the 2016 awards!

And now the #2 Top Read of 2019 at Read Freely!  Woot!

I'm over the moon that The Haunting of Hillwood Farm has resonated with readers and reviewers!  I truly hope my upcoming 2020 release Ghost Moon will also be well-received...stay tuned for the *gorgeous* cover reveal and ARC and pre-order info!

When I started this journey in 2008, I barely dreamed I could get my first novel, Silver Lake, published, much less create six more novels and hit the Bestseller lists at USA TODAY, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble!  It's been a wild ride filled with both joy and tears.  But in the end, my true goal is to provide entertainment.  Reading is not only my favorite pastime, it has gotten me through some of the worst times of my life.  I find I simply can't think about other things if I'm truly absorbed in a page-turning story, and it's a welcome escape from the stresses--and worse--of life.  If I provide readers with a story that pulls them in and gives them hours of relaxation and enjoyment, I've done my job!

Thanks for coming by for my celebration, and please check back for news on Ghost Moon...or subscribe to my newsletter over on the right side of this page.  I send out news about twice a month, and I love to meet new readers!

My Favorite Reads of 2019 ~ #amreading #books #FridayReads #Kindle

Time for my annual round-up of my favorite reads of 2019!  As the term "annual" suggests, I do this every year, or at least I have for as long as I've been blogging.  I tend to get most of my book recommendations from suggestions, whether it's from a friend, social media, or a list, so I like to share my own list each January.

According to Goodreads, I read (and listened to) a total of 36 books this year.  Not too bad considering writing and editing my own books takes a lot of time.  I'm thrilled my own 2019 release, The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, has made it onto best book lists or won awards this year at five different review sites!  If you enjoy romantic suspense and/or ghost mysteries, I hope you'll give it a try!  This title is now on Audible too.

I should give a shout-out to Dangerous Currents too...my steamy second-chance Romantic Suspense made it into Cape Cod's 2019 In Season Magazine as a book store recommended read!

For this post, I usually pick five to seven books I really enjoyed and separate them out by genres, and link prior years as well at the bottom.  I should note that while I read many genres, I'm primarily drawn to Gothic, dark, and atmospheric stories.  Not particularly surprising since I write eerie ghost mysteries, but in my novels, I like to balance out the spooky with romance...which by definition, to be published as a romance, must have a "Happily Ever After" for the two main characters.  But since I have lots of books on this list that are not romance, I'll point out that HEAs are not guaranteed for the other genre listings!

I'm leaving out the Romance genre this year, because my policy on these annual posts is that I cannot know the author of a book I choose, or have any relationship other than being a fan of his or her work...I don't want to pick amongst friends or have any bias for this blog series.  That said, I'll note when a title had romantic elements.

Historical Fiction: White Rose, Black Forest by Eoin Dempsey

Set in Hitler's Germany, this book contains not just elements of fascinating historical fiction, but also romance and suspense.  Franka is a German citizen and a member of the Nazi resistance, hiding out in her family's summer cabin in the Black Forest.  When she finds an injured Nazi airman, her medical training and her innate compassion compel her to bring him to the isolated cabin.  Without going into spoilers, the external conflict between the main characters is unique and intense, with life-threatening consequences for each of them as they struggle with whom to trust with their secrets.  The desire to learn each character's past, along with the chillingly suspenseful scenes, kept the pages turning rapidly.

Legal Thriller: Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

The premise of this book is a trial following a fatal explosion at a privately-owned alternative-medicine treatment facility.  Who was responsible, and was it murder?  A lot of people have described this book as something similar to what would happen if Celeste Ng (author of Little Fires Everywhere and Everything I Never Told You) wrote a legal thriller, and that feels accurate.  It blends mystery, courtroom drama, and family secrets and dynamics while also exploring subjects like caring for special needs children, adapting to America as immigrants, and marriage and parenting.  A lot is packed into this novel, along with beautiful, emotional writing.

Psychological Suspense/Horror:  Here to Stay by Mark Edwards

It's nearly impossible to look away as a newly married couple's life spirals into a horrific disaster when the wife's family comes to stay for a short visit.  As the title suggests, the visitors actually have no intention of leaving, and the situation goes from bad to worse as mysteries surface, tragedies occur, tempers rise, and a once-peaceful life and home become unrecognizable.  A dark and twisty thriller.

Historical Fiction:  The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer

The trope here is familiar...something happens in the present that uncovers a past mystery, and the story is told in dual timelines as secrets are uncovered.  While I've read a lot of these as a fan of historical fiction, this one stood out.  The main character in the present, Alice, faces daily struggles with her family, including her autistic son, as she also tries to spend time with her terminally ill grandmother.  As her grandmother tries to communicate her dying wishes, Alice begins to unravel the threads of the past, in a journey that takes her to Poland.  In alternating chapters, readers are immersed in Alina's coming of age in Nazi-occupied Poland and the horrors that she and her family and friends endured.  This story is full of hope and heartbreak, love and loss, strength and perseverance.

Young Adult Dystopian: Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne

This is a YA post-apocalyptic thriller, and I tend to be a fan of survivalist type stories.  A group of kids ranging from 1st graders to high schoolers become trapped in a superstore (think Target or Walmart) after a series of disasters.  The story hooked me right away, but I have to say one of my favorite things about this book/series is that *both* my sons (age 18 and 21) read it--quickly--at my suggestion, and let's just say it's very difficult to get them reading at this stage in their lives.  I've dedicated posts to finding books for boys in the past, and I'd add this in a heartbeat.  This is a 3 book trilogy and I'm excited to get to the next in the series.

Nonfiction: Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas

This is part memoir and part case-studies, and completely fascinating to anyone interested in profiling killers, criminal psychology, and true crime.  Fair warning--the subject matter dictates some very gruesome and disturbing imagery...it would be difficult to describe the crime scenes and the behavioral markers without some graphic details.  As an author who incorporates bad guys and serial killers into plots, this also served as an amazing reference book as well as a unique look inside the development of profiling.  John Douglas was one of the founders of the FBI's modern profiling unit, and the character of Jack Crawford in Silence of the Lambs is based on Douglas.  Throughout 25 years with the FBI, Douglas was involved in some very high-profile cases, and the methods he developed helped find and convict serial rapists and killers.

Psychological Suspense: The Housemate by C.L. Pattison

A thriller set around two old friends who invite a third roommate to share their London flat to keep expenses down.  Strange and mysterious things begin happening, and this book has a "Single White Female" vibe.  I listened to the audio version and the narration was top-notch.

There you have it, seven titles I really enjoyed from five genres.  Now, I want to hear some of your favorite reads...feel free to comment below!  And check out the links to some prior years for more recommendations.  Thanks for stopping by and Happy Reading!

After tragedy tears Jamie Brandt’s life apart, her only goal is to finish high school so she can leave her small hometown behind.  In the meantime, riding her horse is her main source of solace, until a mysterious stable hand shows up at the barn.  There’s something not quite right about the handsome new employee, and the more Jamie sees of him, the more determined she becomes to figure out what he’s hiding.
Dothan Reed came to historic Huntsville, Maryland, for one reason—revenge.  But his plan can’t move forward until he finds the missing piece he needs to enhance his powers.  As the only surviving Nephilim, Dothan is not only weaker than full-blooded angels; his forbidden lineage makes him an outcast in both worlds.  When he discovers Jamie is the key to locating an ancient weapon, he’s forced to interact with a vulnerable human girl—a task that becomes more appealing with each encounter.

Jamie soon learns Dothan isn’t the only one with a dark secret.  Each new revelation further threatens her safety, and Dothan’s betrayal shatters her heart.  Forgiving him seems impossible, but the thought of turning her back on him is equally painful.

As their connection deepens, Dothan will have to make his own difficult choice: continue on his path of vengeance, or protect the girl he loves.  And when Dothan’s actions thrust Jamie into an unforeseen danger, he must seek the help of his enemy…or risk losing her forever.

"Intense emotion" "Heart-stopping action" 5* #Review! #amreading #suspense #romance #book

A shiny new review from Page Princess for Dangerous Currents that has me grinning ear to ear!  Dangerous Currents is a steamy second-chance romance with suspense and dark secrets, and it's the only one of my novels without a paranormal element.  Of course, I have to tell the story that's in my head (or pick one of them, anyway), but I do like to challenge myself to try different things.  It definitely involves coming out of my comfort zone a bit.  For example, I have one Young Adult novel, Divine Fall, and I wrote that in first person POV (point-of-view) versus third, which involved a learning curve.

So hearing that the suspense plot in Dangerous Currents was "well thought out" and that "the build up was perfectly timed...the reveal was a beautifully orchestrated piece of heart-stopping action" made my day!

One thing that does tie all my books together is the Romance element, and I have novels with varying degrees of heat level.  This one is one of my steamier ones, but what matters most to me is that the reader feels the connection between the characters, the undeniable chemistry, and roots for them overcome the obstacles in their path.

So seeing "I loved the intense emotion that filled every page of this wonderful story" and "their attraction is palpable" means so much.  Even better, "she creates characters that I love and can believe in being real"!  Such a thrill for an author - all my characters are very real to me, and I miss hearing their voices every day when I type "the end".

You can read the entire review here: Page Princess Review of Dangerous Currents by Kathryn Knight

And if you'd like to try Dangerous Currents, it's available at the links below, and in paperback.  And reviews from wherever you purchased it are SO important to authors...it's the lifeblood that keeps us going.  Thanks for stopping by and Happy Reading!

My Favorite Reads of 2018! #amreading #books #Kindle

Time for my annual round-up of my favorite reads of 2018!  As the term "annual" suggests, I do this every year, or at least I have for as long as I've been blogging.  I tend to get most of my book recommendations from suggestions, whether it's from a friend, social media, or a list, so I like to share my own list each January.

I had two new releases this year--a first for me, two in one year, so my reading time was a little more limited.  Writing and editing takes a lot of time, but I'm thrilled that one of my 2018 titles made its way onto a different 2018 list, at a prolific review site...The Haunting of Hillwood Farm was chosen as Best Romantic Suspense of 2018 at N.N. Light's Book Heaven!  Even with the hours spent writing, I did manage to get plenty of reading in, especially because I now listen to books with Audible.  Whenever I'm driving, folding laundry, putting away dishes, etc., I'm listening to a book!

For this post, I usually pick four or five and separate them out by genres, and link prior years as well at the bottom.

So I'll start with romance...I read A LOT of romance this year, as I contributed a book to a USA TODAY Bestselling Romantic Suspense Box Set and enjoyed many stories from the collection (and I'm still reading some).  However, my policy on these annual posts is that I cannot know the author of a book I choose, or have any relationship other than being a fan of his or her work...I don't want to pick amongst friends or have any bias for this blog series.  Okay, here we go:

Romance:  On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves

I found this via a recommendation on Twitter...have to love social media sometimes!  The premise of this novel involves a plane crash among the remote islands in the Indian Ocean, and the relationship between the survivors as they deal with isolation, dehydration, disease, and the elements over the years they are stranded.  It's really a mix of several genres and themes, which I love...suspense, survival, danger, coming-of-age, and an unconventional romance with struggles that will pull at your heart strings.

Psychological Suspense:

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

*and*

The Other Woman by Sandi Jones

I read a lot of this genre, and I completely understand that to enjoy the story, I almost always have to suspend disbelief in several areas, including certain things characters do or don't do, and the acceptance of an often unlikely big twist at the end.  I can do that, because I read for entertainment, and the ride is worth it!  So I have two that are tied for my favorites this year.  It seems this year, for me, is the year for books with the word "woman" in it, much like Gone Girl and Girl on the Train found similar audiences and drew comparisons in prior years.  If you liked either of those, you may enjoy the two titles listed above.

Mystery/Thriller:  Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

Speaking of Gone Girl, this book is by the same author.  I admit, I watched the HBO series first.  I was hooked by episode one, which is unusual for me, as I tend to get impatient with a lot of television shows.  So I knew I needed more of this twisty, chilling tale, and I purchased the audio version.  I have to say the narrator was excellent, and I felt like I was right back in the series, but with deeper insight into the characters and town.  A slow-burning, suspenseful mystery involving the killing of two young girls, with dark family secrets and seriously flawed characters.

Horror :  Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

This is somewhere between psychological suspense and horror, and it's certainly not for everyone.  But I listened on Audible and carried my phone around because I had to know what was coming next.  It's one of the creepiest books that does not contain any supernatural elements that I've ever read.  A desperate mother fends off both emotional and physical attacks from her young daughter on a daily basis, and struggles with her fears, insecurities, and her sanity as she tries to come to terms with the possibility her child is a manipulative psychopath...and the effects on her marriage as a husband and father tries to figure out whose story to believe.

Nonfiction:  The Sound of Gravel: A Memoir by Ruth Wariner

This is the true story of one girl's coming-of-age in a polygamist cult.  Compelling, gut-wrenching, beautiful, and tragic.  I'm not usually much of a memoir reader, but someone listed this on social media as one of the best books they'd read in a while.  When I saw it on sale on Audible, I snapped up a copy.  At first, I was unsure about the actual author of the story reading her own memoir, but I was quickly convinced it was the right choice.  After a few chapters, I was sucked in.  There are scenes that are very, very difficult to read/listen to, times you want to cheer, and times that make you want to cry and/or pull your hair out.  Overall, a fascinating and brutally honest look into a lifestyle most of us will never know.

YA: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Judging from the reviews, this is a book people either love or hate.  A friend recommended this to me, with glowing enthusiasm, so I went in expecting to enjoy it, but also with no clue of what the story was about--except that it is set on Cape Cod, where I live.  The narrative drive was strong, and I was drawn in to waiting for the twists to unravel, then stunned when the answers began to surface.  Although this is not a book that is packed with action, nor is it a particularly happy story, I found it to be a compelling read full of dark secrets and family drama and dysfunction.  I can't say much more without spoilers!

There you have it, six titles I really enjoyed from five genres.  Now, I want to hear some of your favorite reads...feel free to comment below!  And check out the links to some prior years for more recommendations.  Thanks for stopping by and Happy Reading!

The #Book That Made Me Love #Paranormal #Romance ~ #amwriting #ghosts

This is a re-post of my contribution to the latest blog series over at Moonlight & Mystery, a site for all types of mystery, romance, and paranormal reads.  The theme revolves around looking back at a book from our youth that inspired us in some way—a novel that maybe made us fall in love with reading, drew us to a new genre, sparked our imagination, or inspired us to write our own stories someday.

I love ghost stories, which is probably pretty clear from my novels…and while I do try to elicit a few shivers up my readers’ spines, the hauntings in my novels are more mysteries than horror.  My plots revolve around a ghost who has some unfinished business that the characters need to unravel before the spirit can rest in peace.  After all, even ghosts need goals and motivation to make the story work!

Of course, romance is a big part of my novels as well, because I love love stories as well!  Who doesn’t want to see a meant-to-be couple finally get their Happily Ever After, once they’ve managed to overcome all the obstacles in their way?  Readers get to experience all those emotions associated with falling in love while rooting for the characters to find their way to each other.

So, yeah, I have a thing for ghost mysteries mixed with romance.  What started this?

Well, when I was in second grade, my father brought home the usual weekly stack of chapter books the local librarian had recommended for me.  Generally, the books revolved around horses, my main interest as an 8-year-old girl.  But sometimes other subject matter found its way into the pile, and this time, there was a book entitled Jane-Emily, by Patricia Clapp.  The tag line read “A ghost story…and a love story”.  My first paranormal romance, this YA book is both a sweet romance and a spooky ghost story.  I was hooked.  I read that book over and over again throughout my childhood.  I made my best friend read it.  To this day, we're both still scared of those silvery reflecting balls that sit on pedestals in yards.

Ten years ago, I purchased my own copy (finally!) from ebay and read it to my kids.  The ghost of 12-year-old Emily still delivers chills even after all these years as she unleashes her wrath on 9-year-old Jane--but of course the romance piece was there as well between the hunky Doctor and Jane's young aunt Louisa.

My best friend and I *still* call
these Jane-Emily balls
This childhood favorite has made a lifetime mark, impacting what I write as an author--although the romantic element in my novels is decidedly steamier, as my books are meant for more mature readers.  But I still go back to revisit Jane-Emily from time to time--my copy from eBay sits on the bookshelf.  And I may never have discovered this book without my Dad's dedicated trips to the library to keep me reading for pleasure.
