The #Book That Made Me Love #Paranormal #Romance ~ #ghosts #amreading #amwriting

This year I had my seventh novel, Ghost Moon, published, and similar to my first novel, Silver Lake, it involves a ghost mystery mixed with romantic suspense.  In fact, five out of the seven feature this spooky and sometimes steamy combination.  So today I'm looking back at the book from my youth that inspired me to write my own stories someday.

I adore ghost stories, which is probably pretty clear from my novels…and while I do try to elicit a few shivers up my readers’ spines, the hauntings in my novels are more mysteries than horror.  My plots revolve around a ghost who has some unfinished business that the characters need to unravel before the spirit can rest in peace.  After all, even ghosts need goals and motivation to make the story work!

A haunting, an old flame, and secrets from the past...
Silver Lake is a #1 Amazon Bestseller

Of course, romance is a big part of my novels as well, because I love love stories as well!  Who doesn’t want to see a meant-to-be couple finally get their Happily Ever After, once they’ve managed to overcome all the obstacles in their way?  Readers get to experience all those emotions associated with falling in love while rooting for the characters to find their way to each other.

So, yeah, I have a thing for ghost mysteries mixed with romance.  What started this?

Well, when I was in second grade, my father brought home the usual weekly stack of chapter books the local librarian had recommended for me.  Generally, the books revolved around horses, my main interest as an 8-year-old girl.  But sometimes other subject matter found its way into the pile, and this time, there was a book entitled Jane-Emily, by Patricia Clapp.  The tag line read “A ghost story…and a love story”.  My first paranormal romance, this YA book is both a sweet romance and a spooky ghost story.  I was hooked.  I read that book over and over again throughout my childhood.  I made my best friend read it.  To this day, we're both still scared of those silvery reflecting balls that sit on pedestals in yards.

Fifteen years ago, I purchased my own copy (finally!) from ebay and read it to my kids.  The ghost of 12-year-old Emily still delivers chills even after all these years as she unleashes her wrath on 9-year-old Jane--but of course the romance piece was there as well between the hunky Doctor and Jane's young aunt Louisa.

My best friend and I *still* call
these Jane-Emily balls
This childhood favorite has made a lifetime mark, impacting what I write as an author--although the romantic element in my novels is decidedly steamier, as my books are meant for more mature readers.  But I still go back to revisit Jane-Emily from time to time--my copy from eBay sits on the bookshelf.  And I may never have discovered this book without my Dad's dedicated trips to the library to keep me reading for pleasure.

With Halloween approaching, and many activities still restricted, it's the perfect time to relax and get lost in a spooky page-turning romantic suspense!  Many of my books are on Audible as well, and a full list is on my Amazon page.  Happy Fall!

Visiting #Montreal + Taking Our Own Ghost Tour! #Canada #travel #paranormal #vacation

According to the friendly bartender, most ghost sightings
occur in the upstairs bar, which was closed that night.  But
I snapped pictures to see if anything showed up!
I love seeing new places, and as an author of ghost mysteries--and a life-long fan of all things paranormal--I often try to visit some local haunted sites.  Sometimes inspiration for a new book strikes, like when I visited the Old Jailhouse in Barnstable Village here on Cape Cod and came up with the plot for Haunted Souls.  A few weekends ago, my husband and I traveled to Montreal, Canada, for a wedding.  I'd never been, and it's a beautiful city!  Friday and Saturday were primarily taken up with wedding activities, but we made sure we had an entire free day on Sunday to explore.  I tried to sign us up for one of the evening Ghost Tours, but they were all booked...apparently there are a lot of people who share my interests!  I was disappointed, but I wrote down some of the sites the different tours visited, along with the history of the haunting, and we built some stops into our day's exploration.  It was considerably less spooky seeing these places in the bright sunshine, but at the end of the day, after 24,000 steps and 42 flights of stairs climbed, I was glad we had no more walking in store for the evening.  Instead, we had a wonderful dinner and a few pints at Hurley's Pub, a reputedly haunted pub pictured above.

First stop was Dorchester Park.  Beneath the beautiful expanse of grass lies the Sainte-Antoine Cholera Cemetery, containing over 70,000 skeletons, many in mass graves.  Apparently during the 1832 epidemic, some victims were likely buried alive by accident due to heavy morphine administration.

We walked through the Quartier des Spectacles, which sits on the Old Red Light District, an area with quite a bit of haunting history.  As Prohibition laws took effect in the US and Canada beginning in 1919, Quebec quickly abandoned the laws banning alcohol, and Montreal's Red Light District drew crowds of visitors seeking rowdy fun, legal liquor, and the entertainment that goes along with that.  Murder, crime, and exploitation led to many stories of hauntings that still persist today.

One of the beautiful trails through Mount Royal
We climbed Mount Royal to enjoy the view of the city, and learned that this "City of the Dead overlooking the City of the Living" (source: Montreal.org) is considered one of the most haunted places in the city.  Mount Royal is a breath-taking mountain park that is also the location of the largest intact burial ground in North America if you combine the four cemeteries.  The people of the First Nations also buried their dead on the mountain, so it's a very old burial site.

We also walked through Old Port and along St. Catherine Street, and our final stop was Hurley's Irish Pub.  The pub is situated in a former tenement building in what was once the slums, which dates back to 1865.  Dangerous conditions and crowding were problems, and over the years, many fires broke out and trapped tenants inside.  Many sightings of "The Burning Lady" have been reported, but all we encountered was very cool old architecture, great food, and a fun atmosphere.  A wonderful way to cap off a long day!

Tired and sweaty!

More photos I took as I snuck around the quiet parts of Hurley's!

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm is a RONE Finalist! #Book Awards #paranormal #romance

"'Hillwood Farm' is the complete ghost-hunting
package: vengeful spirits, an isolated setting,
secrets, a sensual romance, and
an affable, brave heroine facing off
against the dark underworld." ~ InD'Tale
I am over the moon to share the news that The Haunting of Hillwood Farm is a RONE Award Finalist!  This ghost mystery/romantic suspense was given a Crowned Heart of Excellence Review by InD'Tale Magazine and thus nominated for their RONE Award.  Readers then voted for nominated titles to move to the next round to become finalists, and I'm so grateful that The Haunting of Hillwood Farm gained the votes to become one of the six Finalists.

Now, my book moves forward to be read by the judges, and the awards will be presented at their annual conference.  Waiting to hear where it will be, to see if I can attend and meet some of my author friends who are also Finalists in person!  Whether I'm there or not, I'll be on tenterhooks that evening, waiting to here.  But for me, the old cliche is true...I really do feel it's an honor just to be nominated, and the fact that I've made it to the finals is icing on the cake!  And I would like to take this opportunity to voice my appreciation for everyone who voted for The Haunting of Hillwood Farm...HUGE THANKS!

The RONE Awards ~ Please Vote! #Paranormal Nominee #Books #amreading #RONE2019

"“Hillwood Farm” is the complete ghost-hunting
package: vengeful spirits, an isolated setting,
secrets, a sensual romance, and
an affable, brave heroine facing off
 against the dark underworld."
~ InD'Tale Magazine
I'm thrilled to announce my latest release, a romantic suspense/ghost mystery novella, was selected by InD'Tale Magazine as a nominee for their prestigeous RONE Awards.  The Haunting of Hillwood Farm is in the Paranormal - Short Category, and voting begins April 22nd and lasts through the week until April 28th.  I'd love your vote if you have a moment to check out the site!

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm originally released in the Love Under Fire Romantic Thrillers Box Set, which was a limited edition set created to raise money for Pets For Vets.  I have the honor of presenting one of the checks we're distributing, in the amount of $1,000, to the Portland, Maine Chapter of Pets for Vets in person in a few weeks.  As someone who is passionate about rescuing shelter animals, and who has had many family members in the service, I was excited to be a part of this project.

The authors of Love Under Fire raised over $3,000 for
Pets For Vets, a wonderful nonprofit organization that pairs
shelter animals with veterans seeking companion animals

Now that the set's run is over, the rights to each individual story were returned to its author.  InD'Tale Magazine reviewed it when it was released on its own, and the Crowned Heart of Excellence Review it received led to the RONE (Reward of Novel Excellence) Award Nomination.

Only a few of the nominated titles will make it to the final judging round, and the selection process to get there means earning enough votes from visitors to the site.  An account is necessary to vote--in fact, you can't see the nominees without one--but it's free, easy, and safe--to create one here.  Then you can vote in ALL the categories as the awards season continues!  Plus, this is a great site for readers and authors.  If you'd like to help The Haunting of Hillwood Farm move to the Finals round, please consider voting here--I'd so appreciate it!  Thank you and Happy Reading!

Thank You!

First Review! The Haunting of Hillwood Farm #Ghosts #Romance #Paranormal #Horror

The first review is in, and it's 5+ stars!

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, my latest ghost mystery mixed with romance, just released a week ago, exclusively in a Romantic Suspense Box Set entitled Love Under Fire.  Here is the review of my book, one of 21 total in the set, from N.N. Light's Book Heaven.

"Once the haunting began, I clung to my tablet and couldn't look away.  The paranormal descriptions were so realistic and life-like, my significant other had to keep telling me to breathe."

"If you're looking for spooky romantic suspense, you'll love The Haunting of Hillwood Farm.  Kathryn Knight has mastered the art of paranormal romantic suspense, and it's a must-read!"

"Think Samara from The Ring" ~ N.N. Light's Book Heaven on the ghost in
The Haunting of Hillwood Farm

This book is definitely for people who don't mind a few shivers up their spine while they're reading.  I was going for eerie imagery along with an intriguing story, and it looks like I found that mix!  However, the romance piece adds some sweet and sexy moments as Luke and Callie fight to unravel the mystery...and save their lives.

Check out the full review here, and you can view the blurbs of all the stories inside here.

The special release week sale price only lasts one more day (hurry!), but this set is a steal even at $3.99!  Twenty-one novels and novellas from USA Today and WSJ Bestselling Authors, with 50% of proceeds going to Pets for Vets.  The set has been a #1 Bestseller on Kindle and Nook all week.  Grab your copy before the set breaks up and each individual story will have to be purchased separately!

Why We Fear the Number 666 ~ #Horror #Halloween #Paranormal

October is my favorite month, as I'm a fan of spooky stuff, and most of my novels involve ghosts--including my upcoming title The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, which will be available exclusively in the Love Under Fire Romantic Suspense Box Set releasing 11/13!--and anything paranormal generally intrigues me.  I usually dedicate the Halloween season to supernatural topics, and a very creepy book I recently finished reading made me think of my old post on the number 666.  So I'm resurrecting it for 2018!

Why are these three digits so scary?  The most straight-forward answer is the Bible.  And before I go further, I should note first that I'm no historian, I'm a novelist.  I get to deal in fiction, using my imagination to create mysterious hauntings and spooky suspense.  But here's what my research uncovered:

In most manuscripts of the New Testament, six hundred sixty-six is referred to as "the number of the beast" in Chapter 13 (there's that number again!) of the Book of Revelation.  This final Book of the Bible is sometimes known as The Apocalypse--never a great thing to contemplate--and the author is identified as "John"...possibly the Apostle John but also possibly another prophet.  Evidence points to a date between 86 to 91 CE as the time of writing.

In the Book of Revelation, two beasts appear, one from the sea, and one from the earth.  The first beast is given power, authority and a throne by the dragon (identified as Satan or the devil in other passages), and it blasphemes God.  This beast has the power to conquer God's people, and all inhabitants whose names have not been written in "the Lamb's book of life" will worship the beast.

The second beast emerges from the earth and is described as having horns and speaking like a dragon.  It exercises the authority of the first beast, and even causes fire to come down from the heavens.  This is the beast that forces all people to receive the "mark" on their right hands or foreheads, and this mark is "the name of the beast or the number of its name".  In the American Standard Version of the Bible, the passage Revelation 13:18 reads "Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and sixty and six."  So, a horned beast with the speech of a dragon, rising from underground and commanding fire.  It certainly conjures up the present-day images of the Devil or demons who inhabit a fiery Hell.

Nero was the last Roman Emperor of
the Julio-Claudian dynasty

As with everything Biblical, many various interpretations of this statement exist. One popular one is that the number was a kind of code for the Roman Emperor Nero, who, according to some historical sources, tortured Christians by lighting them on fire.  He was apparently a violent and tyrannical leader known for executions, including that of his mother. He was also the first Roman Emperor to commit suicide, in 68 CE, after being declared a public enemy.  Many Christians believed Nero would return as the Antichrist.

Not surprisingly, the number has been used as an ominous sign in many horror novels and movies...The Omen is probably the most well-known, as the creepy boy Damien had a birthmark of 666 on his scalp.

There is a name for the fear of the number 666: hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.  Personally I'm not a fan of the number, but my sister thought it was fairly amusing when she moved to a new zip code ending in 666.  Then again, she and I both love ghost stories and scary movies (Here are a few of our favorites).  However, there have been some notable incidents of people going out of their way to avoid a connection with this number.  Nancy and Ronald Reagan changed the address of their new home in LA from 666 St. Cloud Road to 668.  A high school cross country runner, Codie Thacker, forfeited her chance to qualify for the state championships when she declined to run in the regionals with the bib number 666.  A US Representative had a legislative bill number changed from 666 to 702 to avoid "negative connotations".

LOVE UNDER FIRE Cover Reveal #1! #RomanticSuspense ~ Reign of Fire #LoveUnderFire

Proceeds benefit Pets for Vets!
A few weeks ago, I revealed the cover for Love Under Fire, a limited edition box set releasing in November, which will contain my latest romance + ghost mystery, The Haunting of Hillwood Farm.  I'm thrilled to be a part of this project, which involves 21 USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon Bestselling Authors each contributing a brand new story filled with passion, thrills, and danger to benefit Pets For Vets, a charity that pairs rescue pets with veterans in need of companion animals.  To find more info on Love Under Fire and how you can get your limited edition copy of 21 books for just 99 cents (!!!!), click here or find the links below after the cover reveal.  Because right here on my blog, as we build up toward release day, visitors get to see each individual cover and read the accompanying blurb...so keep checking back, because we have 20 more to reveal, including mine! Up first is Reign of Fire, by my fellow Moonlight and Mystery contributor and The Wild Rose Press author and friend Casi McLean!

When Emily senses her twin sister's murder, she rushes to Washington, D.C., to confirm her worst nightmare.  To help solve the crime, she agrees to a scheme that spirals her into a treasonous faction with plans to take over the White House.

Detective Ashton Frasier accepts his career choice means a lifetime of bachelorhood, until Emily Rose sweeps into his life.  The spitting image of his latest victim holds a mysterious lure he can't deny.  Placing her as bait in her sister's murder investigation puts her life, as well as his heart, in peril.

Surrounded by danger with the country's democracy at stake, Emily never expects to fall in love, but her sister's spirit has an agenda of her own.  Can they defeat the faction bonded by greed before they're discovered?  Or will a ghostly encounter lead to a deadly passion?

What do you think?  I love it, especially the title font and the fire in the letters!  Plus, being from the D.C. area originally, I love the scenery.

If you are familiar with my books, you'll know ghost stories are right up my alley (as you can probably also tell from the title of my contribution to the set!)  Some of the stories in the box set contain other paranormal elements, and some a different kind of danger or enemy...but all contain page-turning, spine-tingling romance and suspense!
