My Latest Author Interview! Haunting Romance in Ghost Moon

I was interviewed recently for a post on Instagram about my last release, Ghost Moon, so I thoughtI would update my blog with the Q & A since it's been a while since my last post here! These are some great questions!

    1.    How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I have written seven novels, and picking a favorite is so difficult! My debut novel, Silver Lake, holds a special place in my heart, since it took me about 5 years from initial idea to being offered a publishing contract…it was a day I will never forget!

2.     If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

I always write standalones, although sometimes characters from one book make cameos in others.

3.    Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

I do write each book to stand alone, although romance, secrets, and suspense are common threads in all my novels.

4.    How did you come up with the title for your book?

For this book, Ghost Moon, I combined the ghost mystery piece with a spooky, suspenseful scene in the book that occurs under a full moon.

5.    How long did it take you to write this book?

This one took me about a year and a half.

6.     What does the title mean?

I hope it evokes the spooky, gothic setting and plot of the story!

7.     What did you learn when writing the book?

I learn so much while writing every book, as there are usually subjects or historical events I have to research for the characters and plot.

8.    What surprised you the most?

The initial spark of inspiration for this one made me think it was going to be a YA novel, but it is anything but!!  There are steamy scenes in Ghost Moon.

9.    Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?

No, although I do kill characters!

10.   What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

I write in very deep third person, so I develop detailed backstories on all the characters (not all of which needs to be shared, it’s so I can know them inside and out). I “interview” them…for example, what was the best birthday present they ever received, and why? What is their zodiac sign, and does it describe them accurately? I also thoroughly research their jobs, hobbies, issues, etc. Finally, I made sure I understand each characters’ goal, motivation, and conflict.

Thanks for visiting! If you enjoy spooky suspense mixed with steamy romance, I hope you will check out my novels...the Halloween season is fast approaching!

The #Book That Made Me Love #Paranormal #Romance ~ #ghosts #amreading #amwriting

This year I had my seventh novel, Ghost Moon, published, and similar to my first novel, Silver Lake, it involves a ghost mystery mixed with romantic suspense.  In fact, five out of the seven feature this spooky and sometimes steamy combination.  So today I'm looking back at the book from my youth that inspired me to write my own stories someday.

I adore ghost stories, which is probably pretty clear from my novels…and while I do try to elicit a few shivers up my readers’ spines, the hauntings in my novels are more mysteries than horror.  My plots revolve around a ghost who has some unfinished business that the characters need to unravel before the spirit can rest in peace.  After all, even ghosts need goals and motivation to make the story work!

A haunting, an old flame, and secrets from the past...
Silver Lake is a #1 Amazon Bestseller

Of course, romance is a big part of my novels as well, because I love love stories as well!  Who doesn’t want to see a meant-to-be couple finally get their Happily Ever After, once they’ve managed to overcome all the obstacles in their way?  Readers get to experience all those emotions associated with falling in love while rooting for the characters to find their way to each other.

So, yeah, I have a thing for ghost mysteries mixed with romance.  What started this?

Well, when I was in second grade, my father brought home the usual weekly stack of chapter books the local librarian had recommended for me.  Generally, the books revolved around horses, my main interest as an 8-year-old girl.  But sometimes other subject matter found its way into the pile, and this time, there was a book entitled Jane-Emily, by Patricia Clapp.  The tag line read “A ghost story…and a love story”.  My first paranormal romance, this YA book is both a sweet romance and a spooky ghost story.  I was hooked.  I read that book over and over again throughout my childhood.  I made my best friend read it.  To this day, we're both still scared of those silvery reflecting balls that sit on pedestals in yards.

Fifteen years ago, I purchased my own copy (finally!) from ebay and read it to my kids.  The ghost of 12-year-old Emily still delivers chills even after all these years as she unleashes her wrath on 9-year-old Jane--but of course the romance piece was there as well between the hunky Doctor and Jane's young aunt Louisa.

My best friend and I *still* call
these Jane-Emily balls
This childhood favorite has made a lifetime mark, impacting what I write as an author--although the romantic element in my novels is decidedly steamier, as my books are meant for more mature readers.  But I still go back to revisit Jane-Emily from time to time--my copy from eBay sits on the bookshelf.  And I may never have discovered this book without my Dad's dedicated trips to the library to keep me reading for pleasure.

With Halloween approaching, and many activities still restricted, it's the perfect time to relax and get lost in a spooky page-turning romantic suspense!  Many of my books are on Audible as well, and a full list is on my Amazon page.  Happy Fall!

My #Author Interview at #Paranormal #Romance Guild #ghosts #supernatural #amwriting

A few months ago, I was honored to be interviewed at the Paranormal Romance Guild, right before quarantine hit and life suddenly became very different.  I'm sharing it today, and I'm thrilled to note that the pre-order I discuss in the interview, GHOST MOON, is now live...and the audiobook is coming soon!

In the interview, I delve into when I wanted to become a writer, how I came up with the idea for my debut novel, SILVER LAKE, and my experiences with ghosts (a main theme in my novels).

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm also recently won
The Reviewer's Choice Award
from Paranormal Romance Guild!
This great site reviews a lot of books, and I was so excited when my book THE HAUNTING OF HILLWOOD FARM won their 2019 Reviewer's Choice Award...such an honor!

Love Second-Chance #Romance & #Paranormal Suspense? Check out this #Book Fair! #amreading

A damaged soldier, a secret baby, and
a haunting mystery collide in HAUNTED SOULS

Steamy Second-Chance Romance with Spooky Suspense
This book fair seems meant for me...a collection of titles involving second-chance romance *and* a paranormal element!  That describes three of my novels:  Haunted Souls, Gull Harbor, and Silver Lake.  I love to write stories about couples getting a second chance at first love, or finding that person from the past who's always been their soulmate.  And because I'm a fan of all things spooky and suspenseful, I often weave a ghost mystery into the plot for page-turning tension and danger.

Psychic medium Claire Linden is ready to tackle a
haunted house...but not to face Max Baron, the man
who once promised to love her forever, then disappeared...

The three titles I've listed are featured in this promotion, along with 11 other books with a similar combination.  Take a look and grab some new reads!

Choosing a #Book Title...or 7! #amwriting #writerslife #writingcommunity #amreading #FridayReads

I've been a reader my whole life, and long before I could search GoodReads or other online book recommendation sites for stories I might like (or even before those mail order clubs became a thing--I belonged to one of those for years), I spent tranquil hours walking through the stacks in libraries.  Often I would just start at the beginning--authors with the last name "A"--and go from there, taking time to linger over my favorite writers to see if there were new releases.  And then there were the titles along the spine that grabbed my attention.  Being a fan of all things spooky--especially Gothic romance (see Phyllis A. Whitney) and haunting mysteries--my heart beat a little faster when I caught sight of a book entitled Ghost Moon in the "R" section...a 2001 release by Karen Robards.  The cover was atmospheric, the blurb on the inside flap was intriguing, and the setting was one of my favorites...the bayous of Louisiana.  From what I remember, there really wasn't a ghost, or any other paranormal aspect, but there was romance, an old mystery, danger, and dark secrets...some of my favorite things in fiction.  I know I enjoyed the story, and I also remember clearly thinking that I loved the title, and my dream of someday writing a novel drifted through my mind again.

A few years later, inspiration struck, and I had an idea!  Another year later, the complete story arc of my own Romantic Suspense/Ghost Mystery constantly played out in my imagination, and when I explained the plot to my husband, he encouraged me to start writing it.  And...I did.

I had the premise for the novel,
the characters, the story arc, and an image
of the perfect cover...but no title
Oh, how I wanted to call it Ghost Moon.  I pictured a cover in my mind...an expanse of lake with a full moon hanging in the dark sky above.  But being completely new to the business, I thought a book title had to be unique.  I had no idea that different books often share identical titles, and that (most) book titles are not subject to copyright.

So as I was writing this reunion romance, about a group of estranged friends who reunite at a lake house in a last-ditch attempt to solve the mystery of their missing friend's disappearance, I decided on a different title:  The Lake House.  Then a hit movie with the same name came out in 2006.  (For some reason, I was sure this movie was also a Nicholas Sparks book...but in writing this post, I discovered it's not).  Anyway, that title became unavailable in my mind, and I was disappointed.  Back to the drawing board.

But I finally hit on a title I liked when I named the fictional lake where the house that played such a big part in the group's past was located...Silver Lake.  And that became the working title.  At the time, I couldn't find another book with that title on Amazon (that has changed in the 8 years since publication).

I was thrilled when the manuscript was contracted in 2011 by a publisher, and even more excited when my pub decided to kept the original title.  The eventual cover also captured the key elements I was looking for, thanks to my publisher's policy of allowing the author some input when the time for cover art arrives.  Silver Lake will always have a special place in my heart, and I do love the title.

Silver Lake went on to get acquired by a larger publisher
and became a #1 Amazon Bestseller!

I know this post is getting long--side effect of isolation--but I'll nutshell by saying that although I learned that titles are not copyrighted, I factored in an attempt to find something original in my next few books (along with a two-word theme I've stuck with aside from The Haunting of Hillwood Farm).  But as more and more books hit the market, nearly every title with just a few words gets used more than once.

My first five books all had two-word titles:
Silver Lake ~ Gull Harbor ~ Divine Fall ~ Haunted Souls
(and Dangerous Currents, which came after this banner)

So, when I was trying to come up with a title for my seventh (!!!!) book, I returned to that love of Ghost Moon.  I checked Amazon, and there are several books now using that title.  Not so many that finding my book would be difficult for anyone looking, but enough (including some very well known authors) that made me decide it was okay for me to use it as well.  Also, it echoes that two-word theme I've had going for most of my books.

As you can see below, I went with my heart's desire.  I'm thrilled I have my own Ghost Moon now, and I wish I could tell my younger self that she'd realize that dream of writing a novel someday....seven times over.  And that eventually, she'd have a book titled Ghost Moon with her name on the cover.

And what a cover!  This might be my favorite one yet!
If you enjoy steamy romance and spooky suspense, I hope you'll give my books a try!  Thanks for coming by, stay safe, and happy reading.

Top #Book of 2019 ~ My 2nd Award arrived! #amreading #paranormal #romance #writerslife #amwriting

A few months ago, I received my first physical writing trophy in the mail...a beautiful solid glass book for winning first place in InD'Tale Magazine's RONE Awards, engraved with my name and The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, my latest ghost mystery/romantic suspense.  Last week, I was thrilled to open an envelope with my second physical award for this title...an award and medal for placing as a Top Read of 2019 at Read Free.ly.  The Haunting of Hillwood Farm actually came in at #2 out of 50 titles...which is an amazing feeling and also the exact same spot that Haunted Souls claimed in the 2016 awards!

And now the #2 Top Read of 2019 at Read Freely!  Woot!

I'm over the moon that The Haunting of Hillwood Farm has resonated with readers and reviewers!  I truly hope my upcoming 2020 release Ghost Moon will also be well-received...stay tuned for the *gorgeous* cover reveal and ARC and pre-order info!

When I started this journey in 2008, I barely dreamed I could get my first novel, Silver Lake, published, much less create six more novels and hit the Bestseller lists at USA TODAY, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble!  It's been a wild ride filled with both joy and tears.  But in the end, my true goal is to provide entertainment.  Reading is not only my favorite pastime, it has gotten me through some of the worst times of my life.  I find I simply can't think about other things if I'm truly absorbed in a page-turning story, and it's a welcome escape from the stresses--and worse--of life.  If I provide readers with a story that pulls them in and gives them hours of relaxation and enjoyment, I've done my job!

Thanks for coming by for my celebration, and please check back for news on Ghost Moon...or subscribe to my newsletter over on the right side of this page.  I send out news about twice a month, and I love to meet new readers!

I'm a Featured Favorite Author on A #Soccer Mom's #Book Blog! #soccermom #reviews

Excited my pub made a few small changes
to the original cover, including adding
my new USA TODAY Bestseller status!
When my first novel, Silver Lake, came out in August of 2012, I didn't sleep for a week.  What would my friends and family think of my debut novel?  Would anyone else want to read it, beyond people I knew?  Would any book bloggers or review sites select it for review, and if they did, what would they say?  After spending 3 and 1/2 years writing, revising, and submitting to publishers, it was nerve-wracking to put something I'd worked so hard on out into the world...but I wrote it to hopefully entertain readers--and that's still why I write--so I knew I just had to cross my fingers and let my publisher offer it up for review.

Silver Lake has gone on to hit the #1 Bestseller spot on Amazon on
several occasions!

So when I actually received an email from a reviewer currently reading the book, saying how much she was enjoying it, I was overjoyed.  Some of my favorite quotes from her 5-star review of Silver Lake are below  :)

"Every character in Silver Lake is perfectly developed.  The ghost of Brandy gave me chills many times.  By the end of the story, I felt like I had been at the lake house with them all.  I could not put this book down.  Romance, drama, renewal of friendships, and ghosts…something for everyone.  I cannot wait to see what Kathryn Knight writes next."

Since 2012, I've written 5 more novels, and I've always submitted them for review to this reviewer's site, A Soccer Mom's Book Blog.  I'm so honored that this month, she decided to feature me and my novels as part of her Holiday posts dedicated to her favorite books, favorite authors, and books she can't forget about!  These are her recommended reads for gift purchases, and I'm so excited to be on the list.

Visit her post here, and if you enjoy Romantic Suspense, Ghost Mysteries, and Paranormal Romance, I hope you'll check out some of my books!  Sending an e-book is often less than a card, with no shipping or packaging required.  Plus, reading is a proven stress-reducer, so treating yourself to a new read is a good way to deal with the hectic holiday season.  Thanks for stopping by and Happy Holidays!

Exploring #Truro for #Book 7! #CapeCod #Travel #ghosts #romance #amwriting

Spectacular view from the Pamet Cranberry Bog Trail
Truro, MA
Sometimes I get my inspiration from a place, like when I visited the Old Jailhouse and came up with the idea for Haunted Souls.  And sometimes I decide on the setting first...and on a few occasions, some very odd coincidences have made me believe I made the right choice.  Like when I decided my debut novel, Silver Lake, was going to be set in Connecticut, in a lake district outside of NYC.  In particular, I knew I was basing my fictional lake on some of the lakes surrounding Candlewood Lake.  Having never been there, I was a little nervous about this, but I had a good reason for choosing the location.  I started reading books on the area, and then the strangest thing happened...my 8-year-old's club baseball team qualified for a tournament...right near Candlewood Lake.  I did some research in advance, and between games, we visited the spots I needed to see to make the setting come to life.

Ballston Beach in Truro
My seventh book needed to be somewhere particularly isolated.  I set a lot of my books on Cape Cod, where I've lived for 20 years, and since our peninsula is already somewhat cut off from the mainland (you can only get here via car by crossing one of two bridges), I knew I could find a location that would work.

Doing a few quick searches, I learned Truro is the least populated town on Cape Cod, with about 2,000 year-round residents.  It's not the smallest town land-wise, but over half the town is undeveloped, protected land, and the population density is less than 100 people per square mile.  To get there takes over an additional hour from the two Cape Cod bridges.

Pamet Trail...Pamet is a Native American word for the area

So, my story was set...but I hadn't spent much time in Truro.  We've been to Wellfleet, the town south of Truro, many times (Gull Harbor is set there, although the town of Gull Harbor is fictional).  Wellfleet not only boasts beautiful beaches that are part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, but it has a quaint harbor town, a drive-in movie theater, a big flea market, and the Beachcomber restaurant/bar.  North of Truro is Provincetown, another destination spot we enjoy.  P-Town offers vast, incredible sand dunes (also part of the protected National Seashore), Commercial St. with its colorful crowds, shops, restaurants, galleries, eclectic shows and street art, quaint houses, and wonderful bike trails.

Old King's Highway in Truro.  Not the usual version of a
highway!  Unsure what we would have done if faced with
a car coming the other way...but all was quiet.
But Truro has mostly, for us, been a town we drive through to get to P-Town.  And that's the way the majority of residents want it--there are no fast food chains, no shops, no main street to stroll along.  It almost like being in another world...a beautiful, peaceful oasis.

So, I put more exploration on my list of things to do, but again, it's not right around the corner.  But then an old friend (think 40 years...we've known each other since 6th grade) messaged me to let me know he was on Cape.  Staying at a relative's place, in Truro.  Another wow, that seems like fate moment.

First Congregational Church of Truro, founded 1709
My husband and I made plans to spend the day in Truro and meet up with my friend for dinner this past Sunday, and I'm sharing the pictures I took for research.  I'll avoid spoilers, but I will say this book is, like most of my novels, a ghost mystery/romance with some history sprinkled in.  So of course a graveyard was on the list of places we needed to go, in addition to the beaches and trails.  If you ever get a chance to visit this beautiful town, don't miss it!  And if you'd like to keep up with news about this new novel (Ghost Moon), sign up for my newsletter over on the right-hand side of this page!

Full Moon on #Fridaythe13th! ~ Why It's Rare + Extra-Spooky! #Friday13th History #Superstitions #FullMoon #Triskaidekaphobia

For fans of all things spooky, it doesn't get much more exciting than a Friday the 13th coinciding with a nationwide full moon...an occurrence that hasn't happened since 2000, and won't happen again until 2049!  A September full moon is known as the harvest moon, meaning it's the closest to the autumnal equinox on Sept. 23rd.  As someone who writes paranormal romantic suspense, usually involving desperate ghosts and mysterious hauntings, it's reason to celebrate.  Plus, you know, it's Friday!

I embraced the number 13 long ago, since it is the date of my birth,
and there have been many years (including this one, in January) that my birthday fell on a Friday the 13th!

A fear of the number 13 is known as Triskaidekaphobia.  I actually once worked in a building that lacked a 13th floor.  To me, this made little sense...did the people on the 14th floor not realize they were actually on the 13th floor?  Still, the button in the elevator did not exist.  Why does the number 13 get such a bad rap, anyway?

Some reasons stem from various religions.  In Christianity, for example, 13 people sat down to The Last Supper: Jesus Christ and 12 disciples.  The last to sit down, the 13th, was Judas Iscariot, who would betray Jesus.

According to Norse legends, the 13th (uninvited) guest to arrive at a banquet of the gods was Loki, who then killed another god and set in motion a series of tragedies.

Historically, condemned people climbed 13 steps to the gallows.

A coven was traditionally made up of 13 witches.

In the deck of tarot cards, XIII is the card of death - a pale horse and rider.

Apollo 13 was the only unsuccessful mission to the moon; the oxygen tank exploded, putting the lives of the astronauts at risk.

Finally, 12 is considered a perfect and magical number in many disciplines and traditions.  There are 12 months, 12 zodiac signs, 12 days of Christmas, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles of Christ, 12 principal Olympian gods of the pantheon...the list goes on and on.  It follows, then, in some people's minds, that to add a number to 12 would make it unlucky.

That Friday the 13th is particularly scary may be the result of Friday's connection with executions.  The Crucifixion took place on a Friday, which was the day of the week executions were generally carried out in Rome.  America also has a history of holding executions on Fridays; thus, a day that combines two "unlucky" features becomes even more ominous.

If you feel like a full moon Friday the 13th is the perfect time for a ghost mystery, try one of my paranormal romantic suspense novels ~ many of them #1 Amazon and B&N Bestsellers:  Silver Lake, Gull Harbor, Haunted Souls, and The Haunting of Hillwood Farm.

And, one of my titles is FREE today on Kindle!  It happens to be the only book I've written without paranormal elements, but in this steamy romantic suspense, there's a very real killer...along with dark secrets and chilling revelations.  Grab your copy of Dangerous Currents on Kindle while it's free!  Happy Reading and Happy Friday the 13th ~ stay safe!

The Final #FirstDayofSchool Photo ~ #BacktoSchool Where Did the Time Go? #MomLife

First day of Kindergarten and first day of Senior Year!
Same tree in the background...I had a cherry blossom tree
in my yard growing up that I loved to climb (those were
the days) and this tree was my first Mother's Day present
when we moved to Cape Cod and bought a house.
I'm struggling this week, having to confront the fact that yesterday I took the final "Back-to-School" photo of my younger son heading into senior year.  I really don't understand where the time has gone!  Of course, I hope he'll go "back to school" to college many times in the next few years, but it's not the same as having them leave from our house after breakfast, juggling their backpack, lunch, and clothes for practice.

It brings to mind other rites of passage, like my post on Saying Goodbye to Our Backyard Swingset.  But you can't stop time, apparently.  I'll never forget the day I received a publishing contract offer for my first book, Silver Lake--a goal my whole family knew I'd been working on for years.  It was a Friday in December of 2011 when I received the news, and only my younger son was still home, due to his later start time for grade school.  When I shrieked with joy, he came running, and we danced around the kitchen together.

One thing I think I did right!  He's
always love to read.  In fact, this is a
pic from an amusement park, we were
taking a break from rides and he pulled
a book from his backpack!
Now, his hugs are few and far between, but I think that will change as he grows older.  When my older son comes back from college, he's genuinely happy to see us and to be home.  It's all a part of growing up, and I'm hoping I'm doing something right along the way.

But it doesn't make it any easier as a parent!  I know that, with this being my final year as the mom of a high school kid, there's not one game or event I'll miss.  And just like that final first day photo, I'm taking pics, whether he likes it or not!

Sharing a review of Silver Lake I *LOVE* from the Nom de Plume Book Review site!  This book has a special place in my heart, as it was my debut novel and I lived with the characters and the plot growing in my imagination for years before I decided to try to write it.  Then I spent years editing and revising it until I received my first publishing contract (December 16, 2011...not that the date is seared in my brain or anything :) )

Silver Lake is a reunion romance and ghost mystery...a story of second chances, painful secrets, friendship, loss, and the desire to solve a five-year-old disappearance, even in the face of frightening paranormal activity.

I've pulled out a few favorite quotes (I wish this review had been around when my editor and I were working on the novel's blurb and tag lines...NDP Reviews has a real talent for creating enticing summaries!).

"Chills, people!"

"Kathryn Knight is my go-to author for romantic suspense because this is just WHAT. SHE. DOES. BEST."

"Brandy had disappeared years before, and it tore their group of friends apart.  Rain, Allie, A.J., and Jason all went their separate ways, unable to face the trauma of their loss.  Now, though, it's time to find the truth, even if that means facing the truth of their own lives as well."

"For Rain, seeing Jason again means facing their inescapable attraction and the reality that he will likely never forgive her.  While mysterious puddles of water appear, doors slam, and the ghost appears again and again, Jason and Rain wade through the intensity of passion and past hurts to find justice for Brandy."

"How does someone come up with a plot like this?  This isn't normal.  It's brilliant."
