Finding #Easter Dates - Golden Numbers + Full Moons
I enjoy learning about the reasons behind traditions and beliefs...for example, I've done popular posts on Why 13 is Considered Unlucky, The Origin of Halloween, and Why People Fear Black Cats. As you may notice, these topics have a common element--the paranormal--one of my favorite subjects, as well as the inspiration for my novels. My first two novels, SILVER LAKE and GULL HARBOR, as well as my upcoming release HAUNTED SOULS, combine steamy romance with spooky hauntings.
My Young Adult novel, DIVINE FALL, is a little different. When my children were younger, I taught Sunday School, and a passage from the Book of Genesis inspired a new supernatural idea. Divine Fall is the story of the only surviving Nephilim--the offspring of heavenly angels and human women who roamed the earth before the Great Flood. Divine Fall recently won the Reader's Choice Award in Young Adult Romance at The Romance Reviews, which was an exciting achievement...and it's a reviewer nomination for the upcoming BTS Red Carpet Book Awards, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
As a Sunday School teacher, I was asked unusual questions, which I didn't always have the answer to. Kids are unbelievably insightful sometimes. Why, they wondered, was Christmas always December 25th, while Easter moved around? Excellent question...and not a particularly easy one.
According to documents from the 3rd and 4th centuries, Christians relied on their Jewish neighbors to determine the week of the Unleavened Bread; the Sunday that fell within that week would be Easter. Following the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, the date of Easter was separated from the Jewish calendar and its computations for Passover.
Since then, Easter Day is always the Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the Northern spring equinox, which is based on an ancient ecclesiastical computation, and does not correspond to the astronomical equinox. The church defines the spring, or vernal, equinox as falling on March 21st. Easter falls on the Sunday following the first full moon after the equinox. This full moon will occur somewhere between March 21st and April 18th, inclusive. Therefore, Easter cannot be earlier than March 22nd or later than April 25th. In 2008, Easter was particularly early, falling on March 23rd. That hadn't happened since 1913, and will not happen again until 2160.
Of course, there are handy tables available to find the date. But those tables are derived from something called "The Golden Number" and "The Sunday Letter". The Golden Number is computed by taking the year, dividing it by 19, and adding 1 to the remainder. For example, 2014 divided by 19 gives 106, with a remainder of 0. Adding 1 to the remainder gives a golden number of 1. Finding the Sunday Letter involves determining the first Sunday of the year, with the choices ranging from A through G. For example, if the first Sunday in January falls on the 1st, that year is an "A" year.
There are more computations, explanations, and nuances surrounding leap years, but for the purposes of the kids in my class, my summation was enough to explain the phenomenon. The short answer, really, is that Easter moves around from year to year in order to maintain the connection between the astronomical events (the phase of the moon and the season) which would have occurred during the Resurrection and the annual date on which we celebrate this holiday.
Whatever spring holiday or event you celebrate, I hope it's filled with family and happiness. Take some time to enjoy nature's resurrection--the new life, strengthening sun, and longer days that characterize this season. And if the Easter bunny visits (that's a whole 'nother story...blog post for next Easter maybe?), remind him to put some paranormal romance reads in your basket!

DIVINE FALL is up for the Red Carpet Award! #YA #angels #romance
Over the summer, DIVINE FALL received a fabulous 4.5 star review from BTS eMag, calling it a "delicious YA filled with love, rich in history, suspense, and enough twists to keep the reader turning the pages". #Kindle #Book Awards SemiFinals~ DIVINE FALL made the cut! #YA #angels #horses
Last week I received an email from The Kindle Book Reviews with a link announcing the first round of books to move on - the Semi-Finalists. Only 20 books per category were chosen, so that's fairly stiff competition. But my ghost story/romance GULL HARBOR made it last year to the Semi-Finals, in the very crowded "Romance" category, so I held my breath and clicked.
DIVINE FALL was there! This is a YA book, so regardless of the romantic and paranormal elements, it fits into the "Young Adult" category in this contest - another large category with all sorts of sub-genres.
I've really struggled with this book in a few ways, so I was over the moon. My first two books are steamy romances mixed with suspenseful ghost mysteries, but after writing SILVER LAKE and GULL HARBOR, I felt like doing something a bit different. I had an idea for a YA novel involving the last Nephilim, the half-angels, half-humans from the Book of Genesis. And the main character, 16-year-old Jamie, was going to tell the story through deep first person point-of-view. She was also going to love riding horses and spend all her time at the barn--a nod to my own childhood passions.
By the time I finished this manuscript, though, the Paranormal Romance market was absolutely saturated. Young Adult books involving angels in particular. Publishers just weren't looking to acquire anything in this glutted genre, and my current publisher did not have a Young Adult line.
But my fans were waiting for my latest release, and it was ready to go...so I decided to use all the knowledge I've gathered in the years I've been in the writing business and publish this one on my own. Yes, it was scary to not have the backing of a publisher. Not to mention, all the marketing and promotion would be solely on me. But there are some perks of publishing independently, and designing your own cover art is one of them. I had so much fun designing Divine Fall's cover with the artists I chose!
My regular readers were certainly ready to take the plunge into YA with me, but in terms of marketing, I'm not as adept at connecting with a younger readership. So it's been stressful trying to figure that part out.
Given these struggles, the fact that Divine Fall made the first cut in the Kindle Awards for YA really boosts my spirits! I'm keeping my fingers crossed we'll move onto the Finals. I'm also encouraged by the fact that Divine Fall was one of only five books to make the Finals in the YA RomCon Reader's Crown Award, and that this book is also currently up for the Red Carpet Awards at BTS Book Reviews--a fantastic review in their magazine secured Divine Fall an entry!
Since I control the price on this one, I've put it at 99 cents lately to make it virtually risk-free to try! Why We Fear the Number 666 - #Paranormal Postings
A few weeks ago, one of the little icons on Facebook notified me that I had some new "Likes" on my author page, so I flipped over to take a look. While new fans always make me happy, the number on my page made me a little nervous...666 Likes. Yikes! Now, I'm a fan of everything spooky, but I still find this number a little unnerving. So, in the vein of some of my posts looking into Superstitions, Black Cats, the Number 13, I decided to do a little research into why these three digits are considered evil.The most straight-forward answer is the Bible. And before I go further, I should note first that I'm no historian, I'm a novelist. I get to deal in fiction, using my imagination to create mysterious hauntings and supernatural worlds. In fact, several passages in the Bible, specifically the section in Genesis which discusses the Nephilim, became the inspiration for my Young Adult Paranormal Romance DIVINE FALL. So while I enjoy looking into the cultural, religious, and historical aspects of things that interest me, especially when it might spark a new idea, I do so as a novice without expertise on these subjects.
In most manuscripts of the New Testament, six hundred sixty-six is referred to as "the number of the beast" in Chapter 13 (there's that number again!) of the Book of Revelation. This final Book of the Bible is sometimes known as The Apocalypse, and the author is identified as "John"...possibly the Apostle John but also possibly another prophet. Evidence points to a date between 86 to 91 CE as the time of writing.
In the Book of Revelation, two beasts appear, one from the sea, and one from the earth. The first beast is given power, authority and a throne by the dragon (identified as Satan or the devil in other passages), and it blasphemes God. This beast has the power to conquer God's people, and all inhabitants whose names have not been written in "the Lamb's book of life" will worship the beast.
The second beast emerges from the earth and is described as having horns and speaking like a dragon. It exercises the authority of the first beast, and even causes fire to come down from the heavens. This is the beast that forces all people to receive the "mark" on their right hands or foreheads, and this mark is "the name of the beast or the number of its name". In the American Standard Version of the Bible, the passage Revelation 13:18 reads "Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and sixty and six." So, a horned beast with the speech of a dragon, rising from underground and commanding fire. It certainly conjures up the present-day images of the Devil or demons who inhabit a fiery Hell.

Not surprisingly, the number has been used as an ominous sign in many horror novels and movies...The Omen is probably the most well-known, as the creepy boy Damien had a birthmark of 666 on his scalp.
There is a name for the fear of the number 666: hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. Personally I'm not a fan of the number, but my sister thought it was fairly amusing when she moved to a new zip code ending in 666. Then again, she and I both love ghost stories and scary movies (The Exorcist is our favorite). However, there have been some notable incidents of people going out of their way to avoid a connection with this number. Nancy and Ronald Reagan changed the address of their new home in LA from 666 St. Cloud Road to 668. A high school cross country runner, Codie Thacker, forfeited her chance to qualify for the state championships when she declined to run in the regionals with the bib number 666. A US Representative had a legislative bill number changed from 666 to 702 to avoid "negative connotations".

DIVINE FALL recommended for fans of #TheMortalInstruments! #YA #99c
Every once and a while, I google my books, to see if any new reviews show up. A wonderful surprise popped up the other day...my YA Paranormal Romance, DIVINE FALL, received a fantastic review from BTS Book Reviews, with a prominent spot in the Young Adult/New Adult section of their e-magazine! While I'm linking the entire review below, I'll pull my two favorite quotes from reviewer Sasha Hibbs:
"This delicious YA novel was filled with love, rich in history, suspense, and enough twists to keep the reader turning the pages."
I love that! While my novels are considered Romance in terms of genre, I always try to mix in plenty of conflict, tension, and mystery, as well as enough details about the setting to make the reader feel like he or she is right there. This novel is set in a fictional town, Huntsville, Maryland, close to where I grew up. The rural town is located in the very real Frederick County, near the very real Monocacy National Battlefield, site of the Civil War Battle that "saved Washington, D.C.". As a kid, I spent a great deal of time at the huge farm owned by good friends of the family, and their little girl and I whiled away countless hours riding the horses, playing with the barn cats up in the hayloft, throwing sticks for all the dogs that roamed the property, and exploring the surrounding woods. These wonderful memories inspired "Fox Run", the barn where Jamie boards her horse Beau, and where the mysterious Dothan Reed works as a new stable hand.
At the end of the review comes a comparison that thrilled me: "If you're a fan of The Mortal Instruments, Divine Fall certainly satisfies the cravings for Angels, Nephilim, and a wonderful love story". Wow! Jace is great, and I hope fans of the series will give Divine Fall a try...Dothan is worth it, I promise!
Right now, this is a stand-alone novel, although I've had requests for sequels and prequels, and I've left the door open to return to Jamie and Dothan's story someday. History of St. Nick + Santa Claus - #Christmas Traditions
I love doing posts about the origins of our holidays and the reasons we celebrate in certain ways or fear certain dates. Some of my most popular posts have been on the Origin of Halloween, Finding Easter's Date, The Number 13, and Origins of Superstitions.
When my kids were younger, I taught Sunday School...in fact, a passage from the Book of Genesis about the Nephilim, the offspring of male angels and human women, inspired my Young Adult Paranormal Romance DIVINE FALL. For years, I taught the class every week, and my favorite lessons touched on the historical and religious roots of our holidays. The lesson on Saint Nicholas was obviously something I made sure we discussed every December. While most people are familiar with the story of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, many are unaware of how a 4th century Bishop influenced the legend of Santa Claus.
Saint Nicholas, or Nikolaos of Myra, was a bishop in an ancient town in Lycia--now Demre, in the Antalya Province of Turkey. One of his most well-known deeds involved giving unexpected gifts, one of which landed in a stocking. In the story, Nicholas wanted to help three young girls, whose father had no money for their dowries. At that point in history, such a fate would result in a life of prostitution. Not wanting to embarrass the poor father, Nicholas threw bags of gold coins through the windows. In one version of the tale, the father laid in wait to discover who was doing this...and so instead of throwing the third bag through the window, Nicholas dropped it down the chimney, and it landed in a stocking hung to dry by the fire.
The Dutch figure of Sinterklass is based upon Saint Nick, and he more resembles the white-bearded man in red we're all familiar with. In turn, our Santa Claus is derived from Sinterklass, and it's widely believed that he was introduced to North America around the time of the Revolutionary War, by inhabitants of New York City, which was once New Amsterdam, a Dutch colony.
Of course, many other sources have combined to shape both the modern-day image of Santa Claus and the various legends and traditions which have evolved (decorating trees, sleighs pulled by reindeer, winter feasts and festivals, etc.). Those will be topics for another day and another blog!

Forbidden Love & #Supernatural Secrets - New #YA Release
I can't believe it's been over a month since my first Young Adult Paranormal Romance released! DIVINE FALL is a bit of a departure from my usual ghost story/romance combination--this new novel is about a Nephilim, or a Fallen Angel. The Nephilim are the offspring of male angels ("Sons of God") and female humans ("daughters of man") mentioned in the Bible's Book of Genesis, as well as in the Book of Enoch. In Genesis, the passage about this errant race of "mighty men" is directly followed by God's decision to cleanse the earth of the wickedness of humanity with The Great Flood.
The best thing about writing fiction, especially fiction that deals with fantasy or paranormal, is that the writer can let his or her imagination run wild. I have a particularly active imagination, so I had fun extrapolating the three long sentences that make up Genesis 6: 1-4 into my character's history. In my novel, destroying this unnatural race is one of the major goals of The Flood; once the earth is repopulated, biological safeguards are set in place to prevent the conception of another Nephilim.
Until the birth of Dothan Reed. How did it happen? Well, I don't want to give away too much of the story. But as DIVINE FALL's blurb notes, he's the only one of his kind; an outcast in both worlds. His very existence is forbidden. And he's fine with that, as he has only one goal: revenge. He's willing to give up his life once he completes his deadly task.
But there's more than a few obstacles in his way, of course. And Jamie Brandt, the girl unfortunately connected to his plan, is a big one. Ultimately, he must make a difficult choice...and as Jamie figures out what he's hiding, so will she.

DIVINE FALL Release Day! #YA #Angels #Romance
It's here! There's nothing like a release day. I began DIVINE FALL in February 2013, when I came up with the idea for my first Young Adult book. Writing YA is a very different endeavor, but I love a new challenge, and I'm thrilled with how this book turned out. In particular, the first person POV presents a number of obstacles, which I discuss here.
The cover of this book was another new challenge for me, as I was able to take control of the entire process. With a combination of research and luck, however, I found the right people to bring my vision to life with art and font even more beautiful than I imagined. More about designing the gorgeous cover here.
Of course, what's inside needs to be compelling, too--and I'm hoping my readers enjoy this story, which is a bit different than my two previous ghost story/reunion romance novels, SILVER LAKE and GULL HARBOR. But I needed a change, and this story demanded to be told once the initial idea grew in my mind.
