#Authors...Need More #Reviews? Join the Winter Games Event! #writerslife #writingcommunity #amwriting
![]() |
Winter Games begins Feb. 1! |
On Amazon, the largest online retailer for e-books with 88.9% of the market (Bloomberg), only about 5 to 10% of consumers leave reviews after a purchase. Everyone is busy, and I know even if I love a product, I often never get around to leaving a review. (One of my resolutions is to do better with this!)
Enter Winter Games...an event that brings readers who review together with participating authors for a month-long event. I was one of the authors in the Summer event, and I had such a great time, I wanted to spread the word to both interested authors *and* readers for this upcoming winter version.
Full details, FAQs, and sign-up forms can be found on our host's website here.
Direct link to Author sign-up is here
Direct link to Reader sign-up is here
One important note...a Facebook account is required, even if it's not a very active account. The events, book offerings, and communication all take place in the FB group.
And while there's no limit to reader participation, there *is* a max number of authors, so if you're interested, hurry!

#CoverReveal! New Look for SILVER LAKE ~ Ghost #Mystery Reunion #Romance #paranormal #books
![]() |
A haunting, an old flame, and secrets from the past... |
I did like the new cover enough...it felt a little more spooky, and this *is* a ghost mystery/reunion romance. But the font always felt "off" to me...a little sci-fi vibe maybe?
To my excitement, the book did well enough to attract the attention of Amazon's traditional publishing house, and they bought the rights for a 5 year period. My little debut title hit #1 on Amazon again and again under their Encore imprint.
Now, the rights have reverted back to the original publisher, and the book had to come offline while the link and publisher changes were made. Since this was happening, I decided to ask for a new font...one that (to me) suggests more romantic suspense. They agreed to do this for me, and to incorporate my new status as a USA TODAY Bestselling Author. Here it is, before and after! What do you think? Does the cover represent the genre and the blurb (below) to you? I'd love the hear your comments :)

Original cover...font to me suggested aliens/sci-fi? Just me? |

New font! All my covers have a light/dark theme (romance and spooky suspense), and I think this font ties in nicely to the fonts on some of my other covers. |
Rain Anderson can't decide which is more unsettling--encountering the ghost of her missing friend, or reuniting with the man whose love she foolishly rejected. But one thing is certain: the past has come back to haunt her, quite literally.
Five years ago, Rain's tight-knit group of high school friends unraveled when one vanished during their senior year. Now, a parent's deathbed request has reunited the friends at Silver Lake, including Jason Lansing, the man Rain discarded.
Rain and Jason discover the powerful attraction between them has survived, but though Jason is willing to forgive, he can't let himself forget. The possibility of falling for Rain again is too risky.
Slamming doors, crashing objects, flaring fires--clearly the ghost has a message to share. As Rain and Jason struggle to unravel the truth, they must face a desperate spirit in need of help--and a burning passion that refuses to die.

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm hit #1! #Ghosts #Paranormal #Romance #Kindle #books
![]() |
#1 in Paranormal Ghost Romance and Psychic Romance, and The Haunting of Hillwood Farm also hit #1 in that third category Paranormal Suspense that weekend! |
This is my first experience with Kindle Free Days since 2013, when my publisher decided to partner with the new (at the time) program on Amazon called Kindle Select. Basically, to take advantage of "free days" within the Kindle Select program, a title has to be available exclusively (at that time) on Amazon. Gull Harbor had free days in 2013, and hit #1 as well. It's gone on since to hit #1 in the paid store on many occasions, which is a *really* exciting event, so I'm hopeful this new book will have similar good fortune.
Why give a book away for free, anyway? It certainly seems counter-intuitive, based on the amount of work that goes into writing a novel. But it's a way to gain exposure in an extremely crowded marketplace, and the hope is that readers who enjoy the free story will become fans of other titles by the same author.
It was certainly an exciting weekend and I'm grateful to all the readers who made it happen! Happy Reading :)

A #1 Kindle Bestseller on sale for 99c! |
If you're expecting snow today like me (or have already been hit!), take a moment to peruse the list and pick some new reads to curl up with! I have some recommendations below as well. And if you enjoy a mix of spooky suspense and second-chance romance, give Silver Lake a try while it's on sale for 99 pennies! The sale is valid until 1/28, so even if you don't choose three promoted titles, you get a great deal since this book is normally $3.99.
Silver Lake has been a #1 Kindle Bestseller multiple times over, and it's part reunion romance, part ghost story...a genre probably best described as "Paranormal Romantic Suspense". It's a second chance romance between two friends who never acted on their feelings in high school...but it's also a mystery revolving around the disappearance of another of their friends, Brandy, who may be haunting the lake house where the group reunites in a last ditch effort to discover what happened to her during their senior year.

After tragedy strikes, Callie Sinclair is left with a gift she never wanted—the ability to communicate with ghosts. But when a desperate widow begs for her help, she reluctantly agrees to investigate the strange occurrences at Hillwood Farm. She quickly realizes she’s dealing with a dangerous presence beyond anything she’s ever experienced, and something else becomes equally clear—the only other living person in the house, Mrs. Turner’s handsome grandson, thinks she’s a scam artist. While she’d prefer to just ignore him, her heart beats a little faster every time he’s nearby.
Luke Turner doesn’t believe in spirits. He’s moved back to restore the family farm, but living on the property serves a dual purpose—he can watch out for his grandmother. He’s not happy about the sudden appearance of a self-described psychic, or his inexplicable attraction to her. His initial suspicions crumble as evidence points to an actual haunting, but he’s still determined not to fall for Callie—the past has taught him it’s best to avoid relationships.
As Callie is drawn deeper into the mystery, she becomes the target of a vengeful spirit, and Luke can no longer fight his feelings for her. Unable to resist their desire, passion ignites…even as the paranormal activity escalates to a final deadly confrontation.

"I clung to my tablet..." ~ N.N. Light's Book Heaven Reviews on The Haunting of Hillwood Farm (5+ stars, chosen as Best Romantic Suspense) |
Want a little excerpt or two? One peek at a scary scene, one peek at a sexy scene below!
With a sharp pop, the light went out, plunging the room into darkness. Callie stilled, her heartbeat filling her ears. Something rustled behind her, and the hairs on her bare arms prickled. She was suddenly very sure she was not alone. A soft moan floated through the blackness. Panic gripped her, fierce and primal, clawing at her lungs. Did she have a weapon? Would it even work against whatever was here?
She struggled for air, a rancid odor filling her nostrils as she slowly inhaled. Death. Decay. Shadows shifted to her left, and her gaze jerked toward the movement. Behind the solid mass of her reflection in the mirror, the gauzy outline of a face peered over her shoulder. Empty eye sockets stared out from gray, filmy features, the hollow black holes somehow filled with menace.
A sob gathered in her chest, clogging her throat. Please, God. Let me wake up from this nightmare. Something cold and wet brushed against her upper back, and she screamed.
* * *
When she turned around, Luke was standing in the doorway. Her pulse jumped. She’d forgotten to close the door. One of the hazards of living alone for so long.
The corner of his mouth slid up. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to sneak up on you.”
She let out a breathy laugh. “No worries. I’m just glad it’s you.”
His brows lifted. “Yeah? Were you expecting someone else?”
“Well, you never know in this house, right?” She shrugged, and the twist in her towel loosened. Clutching it to her chest, she managed a weak smile as she fumbled to secure it. She could feel the weight of his stare even as she bent her head to check the new knot, and warmth pooled in her belly. She glanced up, and their gazes locked. The air crackled as the moment stretched out, and she recognized something in the depths of his eyes. Hunger. Could he see the same thing reflected back in hers?
Her breath caught, and she took an involuntary step toward him, as if drawn by a magnetic force. Every nerve in her body tingled with desire.
His gaze raked over her, slow and deliberate. “Well, I just wanted to check in on you. To see if you need anything.”
She swallowed. “Do you?”
He cocked his head, his brows pulling together. “What?”
“Um. Need anything?”
He dragged a hand over his mouth, the muscles in his arm bunching with the movement. “That’s a dangerous question to ask when you’re standing there in a towel.”

"A gripping story w/ plot twists and turns" Ghosts + #Romance #amreading #Book Review
It's always a thrill to hear a fellow author enjoyed your book! Love this review left on BookBub for Gull Harbor, so I'm sharing it here! Authors and editorial reviewers tend to leave more detailed reviews, since authors enjoy writing and editorial bloggers are doing their job...but we writers truly appreciate hearing someone liked a story even in a quick one-liner. It's what keeps us going. Writers often say they "write for themselves", and that was part of what started me on this journey with Silver Lake. I had the plot in my head, I knew the characters intimately, scenes and dialog constantly ran through my mind, and in the end, my husband pushed me into trying. I decided to see if I could do it, and I knew if I could get a publisher to contract my novel, I'd be fulfilling a lifelong dream.
But even with that first book, my mantra was: "if one person contacts me to tell me they loved the story, I'll be happy" (and my friends and relatives, as much as I love them, didn't count for this). And it happened. The book didn't exactly go viral, but I did hear from a lot of readers and reviewers. And eventually Amazon bought the rights to the book from my small publisher, and it got wider readership as a result of their marketing. Truly a dream come true.
Nothing makes me happier than finding a great book that I can't put down. I love racing through housework at night so I can snuggle under a blanket and read. Even better is finding a book that's SO good I say "the dishes will still be there tomorrow" and keep turning the pages because I simply can't stop. So now that I have readers asking for new stories, I write first and foremost for them. Because writing is hard. It's rewarding, to be sure, and a wonderful creative outlet, but writing a novel is not easy, and it takes precious time away from other things. The majority of us don't make significant money in the process. But as long as I have story ideas and readers asking for more, I'll try to keep at it, and hope my muse doesn't disappear completely!
I've gotten carried away writing here, as usual. Please check out the review below, I hope anyone who enjoys some steamy romance with a spooky ghost mystery will give Gull Harbor a try! It's a #1 Amazon and B&N Bestseller, and it's now available as an audiobook as well. Thanks for stopping by!
Gull Harbor is a gripping story with several plot twists and turns. Claire, a former law student turned psychic, accepts a job to investigate an old mansion in a small Cape Cod town. The experience turns out to be as much of a layered look into her own past as it is into the haunting of an empty house. The last person she expects to meet in a town where all the locals know each other is the love of her life, Max, who walked out on her a few years earlier. Claire never expected to see him again but now, being in such close proximity, all the questions, anger, and mixture of feelings she had for him have returned.
The ghost story and the renewed relationship of Claire and Max progress simultaneously and weave back and forth. There is one other story though that neither Claire nor Max bargained on. That is the one that puts Claire's life in danger, one that the ghost was trying to tell her about, and one that explains the dark secret of the mansion.

All 21 Authors of #LoveUnderFire in the Top 100 on Amazon! #RomanticSuspense #amwriting #books
This was an exciting weekend for the authors of Love Under Fire! Our Romantic Suspense Box Set hit #1 again in several categories, thanks to all the readers pre-ordering their limited-edition copy (and helping support Pets for Vets in the process!). This is such a great (limited-time!) deal at just 99 cents, and a fantastic cause we're supporting.
There are 21 authors contributing to the set, and while we are all writing a Romantic Suspense/Romantic Thriller for Love Under Fire, many of us write in different genres as well. I often include ghost mysteries in my novels, and my contribution to the box set will have that element...be sure to check back to see the cover of The Haunting of Hillwood Farm and read some exclusive excerpts! I have one novel right now that has no paranormal elements, Dangerous Currents, and that's my only "traditional" Romantic Suspense, with the danger coming from a serial killer and the mystery hinging on both dark secrets and the psychological suspense (so far, almost all the editorial reviewers have said "I didn't see THAT coming").
With so many different types of Romantic Suspense out there, it's one of the most competitive categories. So you can imagine how exciting it was to find out that EVERY SINGLE AUTHOR in our set was listed in Amazon's Top 100 Most Popular Romantic Suspense Authors over the weekend, all at the same time. All 21 of us, with only 100 spots available for the current top authors according to sales. Amazing! I grabbed the screen shots so we could all bask in the moment a little longer, since it probably won't last forever.
Make sure you grab your copy of Love Under Fire Limited Edition Romantic Suspense Thrillers Box Set now, so it hits your e-reader upon release this fall. You'll get 21 NEW, never-before-published stories from WSJ, USA Today, and Amazon Bestselling Authors. and you'll help Pets for Vets, a non-profit organization that pairs rescued shelter pets with veterans in need of companion animals. An Orange Banner Day for SILVER LAKE! #1 #Kindle Bestseller #Ghost Mystery + Reunion Romance
Silver Lake was my debut novel, and because of that, it has a very special place in my heart. For years, I had the plot of this reunion romance/ghost mystery spinning through my mind. I knew the story arc. I knew the conflicts and the climax. I knew the characters so intimately, they were like my friends. They spoke to me, and when I pictured scenes, the dialog flowed smoothly. They wanted me to tell their story; I wanted to tell their story. But thinking it and writing it down are two different things.
Obviously, I decided to try. And for three years, I experienced the satisfaction of creativity, the pain of rejections, the sleepless nights spent editing, the five major revisions based on encouraging advice from agents and acquisitions editors, and eventually, the pure joy of an offer from a small traditional publisher with an excellent reputation.
This started my writing journey, and it's been a wild and exciting ride. My fifth novel released in May, and I have an upcoming release that's part of the Love Under Fire Romantic Suspense Box Set releasing this fall.
But back to Silver Lake...this novel always surprises me these days, because it's still going strong six years after publication. And I never know when it's going to suddenly take off with a strong sales surge and hit #1 on Amazon. That's because Amazon's traditional publishing house acquired the rights to the electronic version of Silver Lake for their Encore imprint a few years back. This was my first introduction to rights acquisition deals, and I am so glad I saw this for the opportunity it was and signed the contract. Every once and a while, I get the pleasant shock of seeing Jason and Rain's story recommended by Amazon as one of their Kindle deals, with all the promotion that goes with that. Which is...huge, to say the least!
I'm not usually able to discern exactly what happened, but something happened on Thursday night that made my week, or maybe my month! I noticed Silver Lake was wearing a beautiful orange #1 Bestseller banner, and it was #1 in two categories, Ghost Fiction and Ghost Mysteries. It was #3 in Mystery and Suspense Romance.
The book was also selling enough to place me into 5 Amazon Author Rank categories, which only happens when you're in a Top 100 seller in your category. So exciting!
This business can be incredibly painful at times. Bad reviews can cut to the bone, even when you remind yourself that everyone likes different things and there's no pleasing everyone with a story meant to entertain. Time spent holed up in your writing cave is time away from family and friends. Releasing a new book to mediocre sales is depressing.
So, when something great happens, you celebrate! I'm raising a wine glass to Silver Lake, the story that launched my career, and the story that still seems to resonate with a lot of readers.
(As a postscript, I couldn't believe Silver Lake was ranking above two amazing Stephen King ghost novels, which are masterpieces. Bag of Bones is in my list of favorite ghost stories, you can find that here) (And for another strange connection I have to Mr. King, check out this story: Granny Griffin and the farm in 'Salem's Lot)

Love a beautiful orange banner! |

Was exciting while it lasted, but the universe eventually corrected itself! |
