An Excerpt from The Haunting of Hillwood Farm! #Ghosts #Romance #Paranormal #Books #FridayReads

A dangerous ghost brings them together...
but will they survive long enough to find happiness?
As part of the Gift For Mom audiobook event, I'm sharing the entire first chapter of The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, an award-winning Romantic Suspense/Ghost Mystery.  This title is available on Audible, with fabulous narration by KJ the Voice Actor, and is also available in print and on Kindle (free with KU membership!)

The Gift For Mom event is a virtual FB celebration of audiobooks and Mother's Day...all are welcome, so please join here if interested...128 titles are being offered as giveaways!  The theme of many of the excerpts is a tie-in to motherhood, and this topic is important in several aspects in The Haunting of Hillwood Farm.  To say anymore about that might veer into spoiler territory, but Alice Turner, the beloved character who is the matriarch of Hillwood Farm and Luke's feisty grandmother, is introduced in the very beginning of this book...and so, it is safe to share the spooky incident that sets this story in motion.  Thanks for stopping by...Happy Reading!

An excerpt from
The Haunting of Hillwood Farm
By Kathryn Knight

CHAPTER 1

The sugar bowl slid across the kitchen counter, its lid rattling with jerky bursts of motion. Alice Turner froze, her fingers clenched around the mug of coffee she held suspended in midair, a curl of steam wavering in the sudden chill. Goosebumps prickled her skin as she stared at the yellow ceramic bowl, zigzagging its way toward her via some unseen force. It jittered to a halt directly in front of her, and her taut muscles went limp. Her coffee mug slammed down against the dark stone countertop, sending scalding liquid sloshing over her hand. She cried out, more from fright than pain, and stumbled back, nearly tripping as her foot slid out of its slipper. The near fall sent another bolt of panic through her. At 73, she was still quite active, but a broken bone would put an end to that.
She steadied herself. Careful. Blowing out a breath, she glanced at the reddening skin of her hand before quickly returning her gaze to the wayward bowl. Had it really just moved on its own? Despite the fear coursing through her veins, a wave of relief washed over her.
Maybe she wasn’t losing her mind. Maybe all her recent worries about dementia, fueled by things like finding objects someplace other than where she’d left them, or discovering kitchen drawers open when she was sure she’d closed them, were unfounded. Could some kind of…supernatural phenomenon be responsible? A shiver crawled up her spine. That alternative wasn’t a particularly comforting thought. And her practical New England roots didn’t exactly lend themselves to that line of reasoning.
She cradled her throbbing hand against her chest, studying the sugar bowl for more movement. But it seemed to have completed its journey and had now reverted to an inanimate object, ready and waiting to sweeten her coffee.
With cautious steps, she backed away from the counter, crossing the kitchen toward the sink. Flipping on the faucet, she held her injured hand under the stream of cold water.
Was she really considering the presence of a ghost? It would help to explain all the strange occurrences she’d noticed since she’d returned from her trip. Without Henry. A deep ache flared in her chest as her gaze cut over to the chair he used to settle in at the big farmhouse table, empty now. With a heavy sigh, she glanced back at the stationary bowl as she dried her hand with a checkered dish towel.
It had moved. She was certain. Retrieving her mug, she nodded forcefully, trying to push away the pinpricks of doubt threatening to erode her conviction. Either a spirit had manipulated the sugar bowl, or she was truly cracking up. The latter theory felt like the more terrifying one. She didn’t even want to contemplate the possibility that her ties to sanity, already frayed by grief, had finally snapped, and hallucinations were her new reality.
Maybe it was time to talk to Luke, to see if he’d noticed anything unusual since he’d been living with her at Hillwood. It was just that he was already so worried about her. As much as she loved him, she didn’t need a babysitter; nor did she want her 27-year-old grandson to have to take on that role. So far, their cohabitation was working out, but once he got a load of her sugar bowl story, that might change quickly.
Another pocket of frigid air swirled around her, and she spun around. Her gaze searched the empty kitchen and the back hallway. No one was there. She turned back slowly, her heart thumping in her ears. From her position behind the long counter separating the kitchen from the dining room, she could see the foyer. The front door remained shut. The windows were still closed against last night’s rain. Besides that, it was 65 degrees outside, according to the thermometer in the window above the sink. A cold front inside the house made little sense, unless…
“Henry?” Her voice wavered in the silence.
The sugar bowl shivered slightly, as if a small earthquake had opened up beneath it. An extremely localized earthquake that had no effect on anything else nearby. Her trembling hands flew to her mouth as a potent mix of fear and longing swept through her. She slid her damp palms downward, over the hammering in her chest. “Is that you?” she added, the words barely emerging from her dusty throat.
The lights flickered. She glanced up, her breath catching. A soft moan rippled through the air, raising in pitch until it became a distant wail. She clutched the folds of her robe, every muscle in her body vibrating with tension. A sudden movement caught her eye, and she snapped her head back toward the sugar bowl as it careened off the counter, shattering in an explosion of ceramic shards and white powder.

"A gripping story w/ plot twists and turns" Ghosts + #Romance #amreading #Book Review

It's always a thrill to hear a fellow author enjoyed your book!  Love this review left on BookBub for Gull Harbor, so I'm sharing it here!  Authors and editorial reviewers tend to leave more detailed reviews, since authors enjoy writing and editorial bloggers are doing their job...but we writers truly appreciate hearing someone liked a story even in a quick one-liner.  It's what keeps us going.  Writers often say they "write for themselves", and that was part of what started me on this journey with Silver Lake.  I had the plot in my head, I knew the characters intimately, scenes and dialog constantly ran through my mind, and in the end, my husband pushed me into trying.  I decided to see if I could do it, and I knew if I could get a publisher to contract my novel, I'd be fulfilling a lifelong dream.

But even with that first book, my mantra was: "if one person contacts me to tell me they loved the story, I'll be happy" (and my friends and relatives, as much as I love them, didn't count for this).  And it happened.  The book didn't exactly go viral, but I did hear from a lot of readers and reviewers.  And eventually Amazon bought the rights to the book from my small publisher, and it got wider readership as a result of their marketing.  Truly a dream come true.

Nothing makes me happier than finding a great book that I can't put down.  I love racing through housework at night so I can snuggle under a blanket and read.  Even better is finding a book that's SO good I say "the dishes will still be there tomorrow" and keep turning the pages because I simply can't stop.  So now that I have readers asking for new stories, I write first and foremost for them.  Because writing is hard.  It's rewarding, to be sure, and a wonderful creative outlet, but writing a novel is not easy, and it takes precious time away from other things.  The majority of us don't make significant money in the process.  But as long as I have story ideas and readers asking for more, I'll try to keep at it, and hope my muse doesn't disappear completely!

I've gotten carried away writing here, as usual.  Please check out the review below, I hope anyone who enjoys some steamy romance with a spooky ghost mystery will give Gull Harbor a try!  It's a #1 Amazon and B&N Bestseller, and it's now available as an audiobook as well.  Thanks for stopping by!

Gull Harbor is a gripping story with several plot twists and turns.  Claire, a former law student turned psychic, accepts a job to investigate an old mansion in a small Cape Cod town.  The experience turns out to be as much of a layered look into her own past as it is into the haunting of an empty house.  The last person she expects to meet in a town where all the locals know each other is the love of her life, Max, who walked out on her a few years earlier.  Claire never expected to see him again but now, being in such close proximity, all the questions, anger, and mixture of feelings she had for him have returned.

The ghost story and the renewed relationship of Claire and Max progress simultaneously and weave back and forth.  There is one other story though that neither Claire nor Max bargained on.  That is the one that puts Claire's life in danger, one that the ghost was trying to tell her about, and one that explains the dark secret of the mansion.

"Impossible to Put Down!" #Romance #Ghosts #Audiobook Review

Last spring, my publisher released two of my romance/ghost mysteries in audio format, bringing my novels to a whole new market of readers who enjoy listening to books...I'm one of those myself, so I couldn't be more excited!  I love the narrator we chose, and the process of recording the books was fascinating...I have learned so much in this journey.

I'm always thrilled to hear someone enjoyed one of my stories, so I'm sharing the fabulous review recently posted for Haunted Souls by Audiobook Addiction!  A few of my favorite quotes:

"I love romance books, but when paired with a good ghost story, it's like gold. Kathryn Knight has combined a little history, a little paranormal, some real life issues and a second chance at romance and given us just that!"

Haunted Souls came in at #2 in the Top 50 Books of 2016 at Read Free.ly!

"I love Emily, her character is full of passion, loves fiercely and will do anything to help her friend. Brett is a strong, alpha type make who has a loyalty and love like no other."

"Narrated by Kristen James, the story is brought to life with such wonderful voicing, it's impossible to put it down. She is a great storyteller and gave each character it's own voice and personality. She is a talent not to be missed."

I hope you'll check out the blurb and some of the other reviews and give Haunted Souls a try!  Links are below, and I love connecting with readers, so give me a shout ~ Happy Holidays!

Final #NetGalley days + Audio #Book Tour! #Romance #Suspense

"A real page-turner"
~ Net Galley reviewer, 5*s
First up: Last call for Net Galley requests for my new release! Dangerous Currents is a steamy second-chance romance filled with suspense and secrets.  Set on Cape Cod, it's an entertaining beach read with some edge-of-your seat twists.  If you're a NetGalley reviewer, I hope you'll check out the blurb and request the title here if you're interested--it comes down from NetGalley on 6/15.  One fateful night tore them apart...will they get a second chance before a killer strikes?

In other news, this past Sunday kicked off a week-long blog tour for Gull Harbor, a steamy romance mixed with a haunting mystery.  This title has been out for a while as both a print and a #1 Bestselling e-book, but it's brand new as an audio book, thanks to my publisher's decision to enter this growing market.  I'm very excited, as I listen to audio books all the time now, and it helps me get through twice as many books on my To-Be-Read list.

A dangerous ghost and an ex-boyfriend await psychic Claire Linden...
Steamy Romance meets Spooky Suspense

After 5 novels and 7 years in this business, I'm having trouble believing this is my first book tour ever.  So far, I'm really enjoying it!  Gull Harbor has had multiple stops per day, a I'm quoting some of my favorite lines from a few of the reviews here.  Page Princess gave it 5 *s and said, "I was actually kind of sad when I got to the end of this story.  Not because it doesn't have an HEA (Happily Ever After).  It does.  The story is more than wonderful.  I just didn't want to leave this world, this town, and these people.  So let me tell you about my friends."  Happy dance!  See the entire review here.

Lilly's Book World said, "I loved it and I loved the characters.  In regards to the overall story, Knight added the exact amount of mystery, the perfect dose of thrills and emotions.  Having the romance side also well created, I can say this is a complete book for me.  5 stars - great!"  See entire review here.

The entire audio book tour schedule for Gull Harbor can be found here.  Hope readers and listeners will stop by along the way and support all these great sites!  I'll be visiting and chatting at each site as well.  To grab your own copy of Gull Harbor on Audible (if you're just joining, you can get it FREE!), find it here.

Happy Reading/Listening!

Audio #Book Tour, #Review Wars, + #NetGalley! Busy #amwriting week

A tremendously busy week begins today, and I'm excited, nervous, and trying to keep up while also doing everything else that needs to be done, like my other job, feeding kids and pets, laundry, etc.  Wish me luck!

Today, Sunday, kicks off a week-long blog tour for Gull Harbor, a steamy romance mixed with a haunting mystery.

After 5 novels and 7 years in this business, I'm having trouble believing this is my first book tour ever.  So far, I'm really enjoying it!  Gull Harbor received two new reviews today, both of which made me smile!

The Book Junkie Reads said, "you get that heart-pounding intensity of drama with this paranormal romantic suspense with a mystery of flavor sprinkled in by the various twists and turns that are presented.  You could feel the skin chill and the goose bumps rise with the way things were unfolding."  And for the fabulous narrator, Kristin James, "There was something in the quality of her voice that drew you in and allowed one to feel connected."  Read the entire review here.

In my other writerly news, my latest release, Dangerous Currents, was selected to be reviewed by The Reading Review Wars, a site offering not one but two reviews of the same book, from His and Hers points of view.  I've been waiting nearly a month to see what everyone has to say, and the "war" goes live tomorrow, with a guest author serving as a judge to declare which reviewer does a better job defending their position on the plot, characterization, and writing style.  Look for it to go live tomorrow, Monday the 11th, here.  I hope for a lively discussion!

Dangerous Currents is a steamy second-chance romance filled with secrets and suspense, set on the sandy shores of Cape Cod.  In other words, an excellent beach read!  You can grab a copy on Amazon or, if you're a Net Galley reviewer, this title will be available to request until 6/15, and you can find it here.  Thanks for stopping by!  Now, back to that manuscript that's due to release in November...

Even with everything I have to do, I still find time to de-stress with a book!

Steamy Romance + Haunting Mystery on #Audible! New audio #book #ghosts Cape Cod

My second audio book has just released!  Haunted Souls is now available as an audio book, on Audible and iTunes!  I'm so excited, as audio books are becoming increasingly popular.  They have certainly become a big part of how I find more time to "read" --  I am now addicted to listening to audio books, and I'm a member of Audible, which gives me a credit a month to download a new audio book for a low monthly fee.  Even so, I'm now so used to listening to books while I'm driving or doing chores, I often have to take advantage of the extra credit sales.  If you've never tried an audio book, you can get your first one for FREE!  And it downloads easily right to your phone.

A few of my favorite reviewer quotes!

My publisher brought Gull Harbor to the audio format first, and this #1 Kindle and Nook Bestseller was released on audio in February.  I'm thrilled that the talented narrator we chose for Gull Harbor also narrated Haunted Souls, because the narration can often make a break a listener's experience.  (And for fans of Gull Harbor, you'll find a cameo appearance by Claire and Max in Haunted Souls!)

New Audio Release!  Voted a Top 3 Read of 2016 at Read Free.ly

So grab yourself a new read or listen today, and get lost in some steamy, second-chance romance mixed with a haunting mystery on the shores of Cape Cod!

From #Book to Audio - the Process, + a New Release! #Audible #amwriting #writingtips

Much of this post originally appeared as my guest post on Jennifer Wilck's blog, and I'm sharing it here because my second audiobook is coming soon!  I've learned a lot about the process of turning a novel into an audiobook, and I'm so excited to have another on the way.  My first, Gull Harbor, released on Valentine's Day (what a release date!), and I love how it turned out.  Since this steamy romance + ghost mystery first came out in print, it's been both a #1 Bestseller on Kindle and Nook platforms on several occasions, so I'm thrilled it is now available on Audible and iTunes for readers who love to listen (which is now something I do constantly--such a great way to get another story "read" while I'm fighting traffic or folding laundry.  If you don't have an Audible membership, you can sign up easily and get your first book free!)

Steamy, second-chance romance meets spooky suspense!

When it comes to the process of production, things can get started in a few ways.  When a publisher is involved, as in this case, they usually have contracted the rights to publish and sell the story in all formats, so the first thing I had to do was sign a contract extension so all contract expiration dates lined up.  I actually signed the extension for Haunted Souls first, and then I was given a form to fill out regarding preferences for a narrator (accent, gender, etc.) and what section of the book I thought would make a good audition sample (one with several character voices is a good choice, and for me, using a suspenseful scene was a must to make sure the narrator could convey the tension).  Then the sample goes up on ACX and waits for a narrator to maybe find it and be interested enough to send in an audition to the publisher for consideration.

Except I'm not good at waiting.  In fact, I'm a bit of a control freak.  So I went with another option: searching the ACX site for available narrators myself, and reaching out to ones I liked.  I quickly discovered there are various models of payment for this work, with some narrators agreeing to share the royalties of future sales (Royalty Share or RS), and others only working for an upfront fee Per Finished Hour (PFH), and some accepting both, depending on the circumstances.  Since my publisher was offering RS, I had to use that filter to look for narrators.  I had also decided I'd prefer a female narrator, since the majority of the novel is from the heroine's Point-of-View.

Both Brett and Emily have Point-of-View chapters in Haunted Souls, but
the majority of the story is through Emily's viewpoint.

Eventually I found a narrator I liked, and the publisher approved of the deal.  Contracts were extended and signed, but I knew going in this narrator was behind schedule due to other projects.

Then something exciting happened.  Gull Harbor was featured on BookBub, and it received a lot of exposure and hit many bestseller lists.  I had several narrators contact *me*, saying the story sounded intriguing and inquiring if the book would be going to audio.  I listened to a sample chapter one of the narrators sent me, and I was blown away by her talent and range.

I replied to tell her that I was very interested in having her narrate the story, but that my publisher was offering RS agreements on audio formats.  Fortunately, the title's past sales on other formats met certain thresholds, and a contract on Gull Harbor was extended.

While that book was being recorded, the contract on the first book I'd signed off on to go to audio fell through, due to equipment break down.  So I hurried to approach the fabulous narrator I was currently working with, Kristin James, and we were able to sign a new agreement for Haunted Souls.  Now, it's finished, and should be available on audio in the next 5 to 10 days!  Here's my author page on Audible with available titles!

In addition to this new audio title, I have two new books coming out this year, so if you'd like to be kept up-to-date on these new releases, plus book sales and giveaways, please consider signing up for my monthly newsletter here.  Thanks for stopping by!

"Dragged me in on Page One" #Book #Review! #Ghosts #Romance #amreading

Reviews are tough to get in this competitive market, so I am thrilled that Haunted Souls has been featured recently on two review blogs, along with fabulous reviews!  I am also gearing up for this steamy romance + ghost mystery to be released as an audiobook soon - stay tuned for details on that!  (If you like audiobooks, Gull Harbor is available on Audible already, narrated by the fabulous KJ the Voice Actor!)

A few other great quotes from reviews of Haunted Souls!

My publisher made Haunted Souls available on NetGalley in February, and it was picked up and reviewed on T's Stuff...favorite line: "This book dragged me in on page one and didn't let go until the final period on the last page".  Music to any author's ears!  Read the full review here.

Haunted Souls was also reviewed on a blog dedicated to two of my very favorite things...wine and books!  Appropriately named the Wino Bookworm Blog, here's a few lines that made me smile: "It's like nothing I've ever read before and I loved it!"  My novels are a combination of a few genres and don't really "fit" into any one category, so I enjoy hearing it's a unique read for someone!  Also, from the review, "I really connected with the characters" - so important, because no matter what the genre, if a reader doesn't care about the characters, it's hard to care about what happens to them...i.e., the plot!  And, things that make my day, "Fantastic read!".  Check out the full review here.

If you're looking for a new read, give Haunted Souls a try...steamy, second-chance romance with a haunting mystery!  Suspense, romance, mystery, and history.  Amazon link to Haunted Souls

"Heart-pounding tension" ~ #Audible #Review #ghosts #romance

I'm so excited to be entering the growing audio book market, with my first audiobook releasing a few weeks ago.  Gull Harbor has been a #1 Amazon and Barnes & Noble Bestseller on several occasions, and I'm thrilled this second-chance romance + ghost mystery is now available on Audible and iTunes now, narrated by the very talented Kristin James.

The reviews are just starting to come in, and I'm sharing a few lines from a fabulous one from Tome Tender.

A little teaser....
"For Claire, winning a ghost's trust and helping it move on is part of her gift, having to face the man who shattered her heart is her curse."  What a delicious tag line!  I love it.

"The secrets buried in Gull Harbor by Kathryn Knight provide heart-pounding tension..."  Things that make a suspense and romance writer smile :)

"Not only can Kathryn Knight create a brilliant edge-of-your-seat tale of paranormal and romantic suspense, she has chosen the voice and vibrancy of Kristin James to bring each character to life".  As an avid listener of audiobooks myself, I know very well that a narrator can make or break a story.  I couldn't be more pleased with the talented KJ!

You can read the entire review on Tome Tender here.

If you have a membership with Audible available, give Gull Harbor a try here:  Gull Harbor on Audible.  And if you don't have a membership with Audible, your first book is FREE, so go try it out!  I love to listen while I'm driving, gardening, working out, cleaning, etc.  I'm thrilled to have another way to get more books "read", and I get hours of entertainment to look forward to with each new download.  Of course, you can also find it on Kindle and Nook as well.

Oh, and look for Haunted Souls to appear on Audible in the next month--it's coming to audio too!

Happy Listening :)

Now on #Audible! Ghosts + #Romance ~ #1 #Kindle + #Nook Bestseller Gull Harbor

I'm so excited to announce the release of my first audiobook!  I personally love listening to audiobooks, and I'm a member of Audible, which gives me a credit a month to download a new audiobook for a low monthly fee.  In fact, I'm so addicted to listening to books while I'm driving or doing chores, I often have to take advantage of the extra credit sales.  So I am thrilled that my publisher brought Gull Harbor to the audio format, and I'm even more thrilled that I love the talented narrator we chose, because the narration can often make a break a listener's experience.

Loved this review by NDP
Book Reviews, and at the
bottom that is says "yes, 6 stars" -
Things that make an author smile!
I hope all readers get swept up
into the romance + suspense!
Gull Harbor is a popular book that has hit the #1 Bestseller spot on both Amazon and Barnes and Noble on several occasions.  It's a mix of steamy romance and spooky suspense...a second-chance at first love with a ghost mystery, and two of my most popular characters ever.  Enough people wanted to hear more about Max and Claire that I had them appear in my latest release, Haunted Souls, so readers could catch up with them.  And it worked perfectly, since Claire is a psychic medium, and Emily from Haunted Souls, also set on Cape Cod, needed help trying to get rid of a ghost who'd attached itself to her young son.

Haunted Souls is up next for audio, and it's about to go into production.  In the meantime, if you're an audiobook fan with an Audible credit waiting, or you'd like to try your first audiobook, please check out Gull Harbor and listen to the sample!

On Saturday, I'll be participating at an Open House and Holiday Shopping Event at the gym where I work, The Fitness Company on Rt. 130 in Mashpee.  It's open to the public, and we're offering raffles, prizes, and gym specials in addition to the holiday shopping tables and healthy treats!  11:00 - 3:00.

I'm also DETERMINED to finish my 5th manuscript this month, and my first audio book, Haunted Souls, will be coming to me for review before it goes up on Audible for purchase.  I'm also gearing up for a new joint venture with 11 other authors...stay tuned!  Somehow, during all this, I'll have to get my own family ready for the holidays!  Wish me luck, and hope to see you at the events if you're in the area.

Haunted Souls will be available on Audible in 2018!
