So I was thrilled to be invited by the popular Book Shepherd site to share some of my favorites of 2023. Picking my Top 3 Reads of the year was difficult, but I read a lot of suspense this year, so I went with a common theme of thrillers that had elements of mystery, dual timelines, friendship, and secrets from the past. I love learning about the origin of the holidays we celebrate, and as an author of ghost stories, Halloween is one of my favorites. So I did a bit of (admittedly rudimentary) research to discover some of the reasons we dress up and try to scare each other on October 31st<span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: 18.6667px;">.</span><p></p><p></p><p></p><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14pt;">Originally known as All Hallowsโ Eve, Halloween is linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain. There are 12 months, 12 zodiac signs, 12 days of Christmas, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles of Christ, 12 principal Olympian gods of the pantheon...the list goes on and on. A superstition is a long-held belief or behavior with no rational basis. As a fan of all things spooky, I like to research the history behind the more sinister superstitions we hold, especially around Halloween, the season that embraces the paranormal. Of course, m</span></span><span style="font-size: large;">any of these superstitions date back to ancient times, so tracing the exact sources can be tricky...and in doing the research, it definitely appears that often times, several factors seem to have combined to create the belief or behavior.</span></p><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3U3HncihrKxzHhA7KNSX1KI2lBr4WP8jJe1N2F2uU9DbO_Gl_1MfHkAEvuNBgtL4Jweuz5953azmyy3fPS8DH4bvC542lOv-_Ebemmc46IAyfsodxbXA8XVa04ffVA1-ykh7AStN9h-Du/s1600/pumpkin-and-a-black-cat-626270-m%5B1%5D.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3U3HncihrKxzHhA7KNSX1KI2lBr4WP8jJe1N2F2uU9DbO_Gl_1MfHkAEvuNBgtL4Jweuz5953azmyy3fPS8DH4bvC542lOv-_Ebemmc46IAyfsodxbXA8XVa04ffVA1-ykh7AStN9h-Du/s1600/pumpkin-and-a-black-cat-626270-m%5B1%5D.jpg" width="150" /></a><span style="font-size: large;">I love (and rescue) black cats, so it's safe to say I don't believe I'm in trouble if they cross my path. There are many reasons black cats came to be associated with magic, witchcraft, and the occult, and I have an entire <a href="http://kathrynknightbooks.blogspot.com/2016/08/celebrating-blackcatappreciationday.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #fff2cc;"><b>post</b></span></a> dedicated to more lengthy details, which I'll also link below, but the idea that cats had magical powers dates back to ancient times; some cultures worshiped them, while others feared them. Being nocturnal animals, they are out at night, gracefully slinking about in even total darkness. And the color black in particular is associated with sinister forces. Some believed witches could turn into cats to avoid capture, or that black cats served as their familiars. </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrlabXWnu4zW5sKUN8tWQIvDR7YjHeRijIP2q79Fys5Pz7tvXg0o4h2ZCoprv7F69qe5UXPdrtJqBGS5QXWKee3wWkWsmhsHkrb9F3XMe7zE6jzxqfeQTBXpTC1uCjeatD3tYwUrnbwd3q/s1600/cats+Halloween.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="544" data-original-width="640" height="340" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrlabXWnu4zW5sKUN8tWQIvDR7YjHeRijIP2q79Fys5Pz7tvXg0o4h2ZCoprv7F69qe5UXPdrtJqBGS5QXWKee3wWkWsmhsHkrb9F3XMe7zE6jzxqfeQTBXpTC1uCjeatD3tYwUrnbwd3q/s400/cats+Halloween.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption"><span style="color: white;">These are my 2 black kitties, Jinx and Max, getting into the Halloween spirit...<br />(cats are real, crows are just decoration!)</span></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpI6CBKmusqzwtaAd7g5Whp79Mlfz4xcFb6qI-5AODgU_oesBI40EmxxO6uyZYqJSoXwN3Lw_V3KqDWZzlFdlN_p5CoXlj_VFhksXNQkhbrGUW4EIfQr05Esqm5Z8s1MctvPPKbK2m6Kz7/s1600/number-13%255B1%255D.png" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="600" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpI6CBKmusqzwtaAd7g5Whp79Mlfz4xcFb6qI-5AODgU_oesBI40EmxxO6uyZYqJSoXwN3Lw_V3KqDWZzlFdlN_p5CoXlj_VFhksXNQkhbrGUW4EIfQr05Esqm5Z8s1MctvPPKbK2m6Kz7/s200/number-13%255B1%255D.png" width="200" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;">Another "unlucky" symbol I can't accept (because it's the date of my birth) is the number 13. There are a whole host of reasons for the fear of this number, and I take a deeper look into Triskaidekaphobia in another <a href="http://kathrynknightbooks.blogspot.com/2017/10/why-we-fear-13-fridaythe13th-friday13.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #fff2cc;"><b>post</b></span></a>, which I'll also link below. M</span><span style="font-size: large;">any of the reasons stem from different religions: in Christianity, for example, Judas Iscariot (a figure also associated with the spilling of salt superstition discussed below) was the 13th--and last--person to sit down at the Last Supper. According to Norse legends, the god Loki was the 13th guest to arrive at a banquet, and he then killed another god. Historically, there were 13 steps to the gallows, covens were made up of 13 witches, and XIII is the card of death in a Tarot deck. </span><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Another well-known superstition involves the belief that walking under a ladder brings bad luck. One theory is that this dates back to ancient Egypt, where triangles were considered sacred (think pyramids). A ladder propped against a wall forms a triangle; walking through would desecrate the triangle. The Christian religion, with its concept of the Holy Trinity, also contributed to the idea that violating a triangle would be unlucky. Finally, some sources point to the use of ladders in the gallows. To walk under the ladder was to be caught in the hangman's line of vision.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6IfXQdfmRTL42znY6LB7uP7EUN-hMt1oiPb-tDF1S3FwJ_Y0NIt7r8ht-H6EBGq909p8yMt_Vk4RZzyejm4s6ptZeN9H-K9nChdBkEbuBDmuvJ7U9Q37dAWO40yBK3QZBaJthFOJL0VKc/s1600/images%5B2%5D.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6IfXQdfmRTL42znY6LB7uP7EUN-hMt1oiPb-tDF1S3FwJ_Y0NIt7r8ht-H6EBGq909p8yMt_Vk4RZzyejm4s6ptZeN9H-K9nChdBkEbuBDmuvJ7U9Q37dAWO40yBK3QZBaJthFOJL0VKc/s1600/images%5B2%5D.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="font-size: large;">Do you cringe if you spill the salt? At one time, salt was a very valuable commodity, so spilling salt could have indeed been truly unlucky. If you consider our word "salary" comes from the Latin word "salarium", which means salt cellar, the value of salt throughout history becomes even more evident.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Another explanation involves the Last Supper, during which Judas Iscariot--the betrayer of Jesus--apparently spilled the salt. In the painting <em>The Last Supper</em> by Leonardo da Vinci, Judas is the second to the left of Jesus; his hand is clutched around a bag (of silver, most likely), and his arm has knocked over a cellar of salt. You can better see the detail in this copy of the painting. Judas is the only one with his elbow on the table; the spilled salt is near his wrist.</span><br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKedrVN_iePQnoyl3WZzGW4apxVoD8uuP2XFmSHRQZEPdI8TbIG-ftwull7uqbcl0SnpJliVJVcWl3BvZF2UCBYOlI3en1U8k-n_hdOyisynLISof5HDcqcB7yJDI3ujsvKla85shexmXC/s1600/Last+Supper.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKedrVN_iePQnoyl3WZzGW4apxVoD8uuP2XFmSHRQZEPdI8TbIG-ftwull7uqbcl0SnpJliVJVcWl3BvZF2UCBYOlI3en1U8k-n_hdOyisynLISof5HDcqcB7yJDI3ujsvKla85shexmXC/s400/Last+Supper.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 12.8px;"><span style="color: white;">Da Vinci's Last Supper by Giacomo Raffaelli Attribution: Alberto Fernandez Fernandez, Wikimedia Commons</span></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQgY4edtBm4LF4sxJFIJ-jojAPRNN4Ej9m_c2l1dd6Jo3aPKbz2Yh6TY0aA_n-nvo5NTU1Jo-klFX8HWZkQ3p-PjTFlWUdA5Fd4b3K66FhnhKE6PZwVCIHx0VhOPuXpOnKw1X0AiEde-SZ/s1600/FullSizeRender+%25281%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1121" data-original-width="1029" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQgY4edtBm4LF4sxJFIJ-jojAPRNN4Ej9m_c2l1dd6Jo3aPKbz2Yh6TY0aA_n-nvo5NTU1Jo-klFX8HWZkQ3p-PjTFlWUdA5Fd4b3K66FhnhKE6PZwVCIHx0VhOPuXpOnKw1X0AiEde-SZ/s200/FullSizeRender+%25281%2529.jpg" width="183" /></a></div><br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">The way to possibly ward off the bad luck associated with spilled salt is to scoop some up and throw it over your left shoulder, into the Devil's eyes. This stems from a belief that the Devil stands behind a person's left shoulder.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Breaking a mirror is said to carry a whole seven years of bad luck. I don't put a lot of stock into most superstitions, but I admit the thought of breaking a mirror makes me nervous. Like salt, mirrors held a great deal of value at one time--they were both expensive and rare. Breaking one was a loss, and the guilty party might well be considered rightfully unlucky. Another explanation goes back to the idea that a person's soul is revealed in their reflection; breaking a mirror would then equate to breaking one's soul.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">If you'd like to read further details on why people fear black cats, check out </span><a href="http://kathrynknightbooks.blogspot.com/2016/08/celebrating-blackcatappreciationday.html" style="font-size: large;" target="_blank"><span style="color: #d9ead3;"><b>this post</b></span></a><span style="font-size: large;">. My birthday is January 13th, which is a whole 'nother post on <a href="https://kathrynknightbooks.blogspot.com/2023/01/why-we-fear-13-and-fridaythe13th.html" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: #c0f6f3;">why I consider the number 13 lucky</span></b></a>! So my birthstone is the gorgeous garnet, and I have loved it since I was little. Although garnets come in many hues, most people associate the garnet with a brilliant deep red...which happens to be my favorite color! (I mean, look at my blog design, lol). The name "garnet" comes from a word for pomegranate, the dark red fruit known as "granatus" in Latin. Garnets are thought to offer protection and healing properties, which I definitely appreciate! With its ๐ฅ fiery brilliance, garnets represent passion, creativity, and strength...pretty appropriate symbols for this romance author </span><span style="font-size: large;">๐ </span><span style="font-size: medium;">and fitness instructor </span><span style="font-size: large;">๐ช</span><span style="font-size: large;">! <span style="font-size: large;">I often blog about haunted places and spooky themes, since I write a lot of ghost mysteries into my novels. Not surprisingly, I love October, because Iโm a big fan of everything paranormalโbooks and movies especially. While I do read horror, the paranormal novels I write arenโt designed to fit into that genre. I aim to create mysterious, spooky, and suspenseful (but not gory) ghost stories. Thankfully, many readers have claimed certain scenes sent chills down their spine, which is exactly the kind of reaction I intend (and I include romance as well to heat things back up). Many have also said they stayed up all night reading one of my books--hopefully that was because they couldnโt put it down, and not because they were afraid to turn off the lights!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The scariest book I ever read was The Exorcist, by William Peter Blatty, in part because itโs based on a true incident that happened in the DC area, not far from where I grew up (the actual exorcism was performed on a young boy from Cottage City, MD). Part of the movie was filmed in Georgetown (Iโve visited the so-called โExorcist stepsโ many times...itโs definitely creepy), and I think the film is even scarier than the book. The terrifying visuals were heightened by the unconventional methods director William Friedkin used to get real reactions from the actorsโslapping one actor in the face and firing a gun behind another are just two examples.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Then of course there is the so-called curse surrounding the film. In the early 1970s, not everything was documented for reality TV, so there are conflicting accounts of the strange occurrences. Itโs said that between 4 and 9 people associated with the film died during filming or shortly after the release. An unexplained fire destroyed the MacNeil residence movie setโwith the odd exception of the character Reganโs bedroomโcausing a six-week delay in production. At the Italian premier of the film, a 400-year-old cross near the theater was destroyed by a bolt of lightning.</span><br />

When people picture the Cape, the images tend to be coastal and quaint: beaches and lakes, inlets dotted with tidal pools, crimson cranberry bogs, shingled houses with window boxes, and yards filled with colorful hydrangeas. While some types of hydrangeas can be grown anywhere in Massachusetts, the familiar bright blue ball-shaped blooms only grow in certain areas; they require the climate associated with USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6 or 7, which includes the coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands. These are the bigleaf hydrangeas: <em>Hydrangea macrophylla. </em>The mophead hydrangeas (the large, lush balls of flowers) and the lacecap hydrangeas (the looser clusters of flat flowers) belong to this group.<br />

</tbody></table><span style="font-size: medium;">I'm an enthusiastic gardener, although not a great one. However, <em>Hydrangea macrophylla</em> grow easily on Cape Cod, due to its acidic, sandy soil. So over the years, we've added almost a dozen to the yard. The shrubs need minimal care, and we're rewarded with huge spheres of vibrant blue and purple flowers all summer long. Until this summer.</span><br />
<br />
๏ปฟ๏ปฟ<span style="font-size: medium;">The Cape is mourning its hydrangeas this year. One of the reasons <em>Hydrangea macrophylla</em> can flourish here is our warmer winters. People envision Massachusetts as a cold Northern state, but Cape Cod sticks out into the ocean, surrounded by water in every direction. The temperature of the ocean water helps keep our air warmer during the winter months. But this past winter was brutal (see: <a href="http://kathrynknightbooks.blogspot.com/2014/02/blizzards-blackouts-and-broken-legsgood.html" target="_blank"><strong><span style="color: #45818e;">Good Riddance, February</span></strong></a>).</span><br />
<br /><span style="font-size: medium;">
The summer blooms come from the "old wood", (eta: or old and new, with the endless summer varieties available now) the stalks that are exposed to the cold and frost all winter long. Generally in the spring, leaves and buds begin to grow from the old wood, as new growth emerges from the soil to fill out the plant. But apparently the winter this year here was so cold, the freezing temps actually killed the old wood. While new growth came in as expected, the buds on the old wood never appeared. </span><br />

This is hardly a tragedy, but the beauty of nature is one of those things that makes us take a moment to pause and appreciate our surroundings. And gardening, like writing, is one of those endeavors that requires hope and patience to see a payoff. So it's hard to watch the gorgeous shrubs fail to flower this year. But each fall, I usually clip a few of the giant blooms, hang them to dry, set them in small vases, and appreciate them all winter. I'll just have to dust off the ones from last fall and enjoy them for one more year.</span><br />

If you need a taste of Cape Cod as the summer winds down, try my ghost story/romance <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Gull-Harbor-Kathryn-Knight-ebook/dp/B00BK9QWNY" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: #c2f9f8;">GULL HARBOR</span></b></a>. I set this one near the National Seashore, by one of the Cape's many kettle ponds. Claire's a medium, in town to rid an old house of its aggressive poltergeist. She's expecting a challenge as she investigates the haunting--but she never expects to encounter Max Baron, the man who promised to love her forever, then abandoned her without a hint of an explanation after college graduation. Is Gull Harbor big enough for both of them?<br />

Max still can't share his reasons for abandoning her so long ago, but psychic</span><span style="font-size: large;"> medium Claire is dealing with a very disturbing haunting, and she finds herself leaning on her former boyfriend for support. And Max still feels the need to take care of her, even after all these years - so he's brought lunch for her from the local tavern he owns. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the historic Jacob Hill Farm in Seekonk, Massachusetts. It is now an amazing wellness center, with three of the original structures still gracing this beautiful property, 300 years after the farm was first built! Before it became the wellness center, it was Jacob Hill Inn, Seekonk's first professional bed and breakfast. The owners of the Inn purchased the property in 1991, and did a great deal of work to restore the landmark buildings, while also researching the property's history. Much of this post includes information from their <b><a href="https://historicjacobhill.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #e9eae3;">website</span></a> </b>and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrJOk165EQw&t=29s" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: #f7f7f7;">television appearance</span></b></a>, used with permission. It passed through generations of his family and was eventually deeded to Thomas Allen in 1722. With 10 children, building a large home was necessary, and it still stands today. When Calvin Jacob, a prominent deacon, married into the family, the property eventually acquired the name Jacob Hill Farm.</span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1GJa9kKWSliCItTfJaV9wpOeyLW_OaMLMnxCvspWtFTcnDQFnml4FZUElGydWQ1umFzfatA2RFugivPhYxRXha5UhY14wV5kHFLIXBIQzZGGFQv75VDQ6wBukGOaL_swh8VHxXlk4CrtjTmKiOCffv-lQKKonWAZgWSMioyF2ULsMKdtWVk5jbxSJTw/s640/IMG_4621.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1GJa9kKWSliCItTfJaV9wpOeyLW_OaMLMnxCvspWtFTcnDQFnml4FZUElGydWQ1umFzfatA2RFugivPhYxRXha5UhY14wV5kHFLIXBIQzZGGFQv75VDQ6wBukGOaL_swh8VHxXlk4CrtjTmKiOCffv-lQKKonWAZgWSMioyF2ULsMKdtWVk5jbxSJTw/w400-h300/IMG_4621.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="color: white;">The "Front House", known as the "Club House"<br /> during the years it was a hunt club <br />(and then again when it was the Inn), as it appears today</span></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">In 1915, the wealthy Grosvenor family purchased Jacob Hill Farm, in part due to their love of horseback riding. In 1924, it became the Jacobs Hill Hunt Club, a members-only establishment possibly arising in part to the restrictions of Prohibition. The Grosvenors donated the Front House to the club, and that became the Club House. Note the seats on the sides for waiting passengers. One of the other three buildings still standing today was originally a barn which was converted to a carriage house. The third structure, known as "The Barn", was the barn constructed by the Hunt Club. It was painted white...a symbol of affluence at the time as white paint cost more in those days than the usual red paint associated with barns on farms. It is still white today.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">The Hunt Club was active from 1924 -1943, hosting horse shows and fox hunts (where no foxes were actually harmed! Only their scent was used for the chase). The property passed through several families until it was purchased as an Inn. At one point, a member of the Atomic Energy Commission resided there, and there was a phone in the Front House that connected directly to the White House.</span></p><p></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; font-size: large; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG2pKjWA3FDKfMWTaO7wNEqWI0n_mWisvWe_6mzcEEwI_3ZMC6_udJe5ziHVkPzcNAc63G8i7wiZFWpuxVj2_7oOCTA8JfMiZDiHwL_ynPUEA4O0tywIo8ZIlUFXVNJdNUt73dDgByeMKciWxBMr8rAlNKCMrceXxZf7kjGzYB1ZquT4R7tOLcsOe33g/s640/IMG_4616.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="605" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG2pKjWA3FDKfMWTaO7wNEqWI0n_mWisvWe_6mzcEEwI_3ZMC6_udJe5ziHVkPzcNAc63G8i7wiZFWpuxVj2_7oOCTA8JfMiZDiHwL_ynPUEA4O0tywIo8ZIlUFXVNJdNUt73dDgByeMKciWxBMr8rAlNKCMrceXxZf7kjGzYB1ZquT4R7tOLcsOe33g/w168-h178/IMG_4616.jpg" width="168" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="color: white;"><i>Hello?</i> ;)<br /><span style="font-size: small;">Door to the Front<br />House basement</span></span></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-size: medium;">So, with such a rich history, this author of ghost mysteries had to ask about any unusual happenings.
