Happy New Year! Why We Celebrate #NewYearsDay #HappyNewYear2020 #NewYearsEve

Sunrise after a blizzard on Cape Cod
Happy New Year!  Although often bitterly cold on Cape Cod, where I live, I like January.  It’s my birthday month, and my son’s, and it can be a chance to relax and unwind after the frenetic pace of the holidays.  Plus, there’s the whole idea of a fresh start and making resolutions.

I'll be honest, 2019 was a tough year for me personally, but I did have some wonderful moments in my writerly life...my latest ghost mystery/romantic suspense, The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, brought home some new awards...including my very first trophy for Best Paranormal of 2019 from InD'Tale Magazine's prestigious RONE Awards.  It was also voted one of the Top 3 Books of 2019 at Read Free.ly and named a Top 40 Paranormal Romance Pick of all time at Reedsy Discovery.  And Dangerous Currents, a steamy second-chance romantic suspense, was listed in a magazine as a book store recommendation for summer reads.  The Kindle version is on sale for just 99c right now!

I'm excited for 2020, so on with the post...why do we celebrate the start of a new year?  Here's a few facts I found about New Year's Day and January in general.

A statue of Janus
New Year’s Day is the first day of January according to both the Julian calendar (introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BC) and the Gregorian calendar (named for Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in 1582).  The difference in these two calendars is a .002% change in the length of the year.

The Julian calendar was based on the Roman calendar, and the name of the month of January is generally attributed to the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings and endings, who is depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions: into the past as well as the future.

Since the Gregorian calendar is now used, at least in practice, by most countries, New Year’s Day is considered the world’s most celebrated public holiday.

The ancient belief that the beginning of an event impacted the whole led people to offer good health and well wishes on this first day of a new year, as the long, dark days of the Winter Solstice were being left behind.  A prosperous January 1st with plenty of food and drink would hopefully lead to the same for the entire month and year.

Of course, local traditions abound to mark this day, and one of the big ones in the United States is the making of resolutions.  If one of your goals is to reduce stress, you already probably know that reading has been proven to help with this!  What could be better after the hustle and bustle of the holidays than wrapping yourself up in a blanket, putting your feet up, and getting lost in a page-turning story?  My books are filled with steamy romance, haunting mysteries, dark secrets, and spine-tingling suspense.  Several are now available as audiobooks as well!  I hope you’ll check out my titles in the tabs below and treat yourself to a new read ~  Thanks for stopping by and best wishes for a HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND FUN 2020!

One fateful night tore them apart...
will they get a second chance
before a killer strikes?
The 99c sale days are here for Dangerous Currents ~ a steamy second-chance romance filled with secrets and suspense.  Grab your Kindle copy for less than a buck and get lost in Malorie and Dean's story!  One fateful night tore them apart...will they get a second chance before a killer strikes?

This Romantic Suspense is a bookstore recommended read, and I've included the blurb and a few of my favorite review site quotes below.  Thanks for stopping by and happy reading!

When a costly mistake ends Malorie Montgomery's career, she returns to Cape Cod in search of a fresh start. But her plans for a new--and quiet--life are quickly derailed when she makes a grisly discovery in the woods, and her screams bring the one person from her past she'd hoped to avoid. Dean Slater, the ex-boyfriend who broke her heart in high school, now lives in the beachfront community that was supposed to be her haven...and he's just as hot as he was six years ago.

With his rough background, Dean always knew he wasn't good enough for the kind, intelligent beauty who claimed his heart, but somehow he'd believed their love was strong enough to survive anything--until the tragic night she turned her back on him when he needed her trust the most. Despite their painful history, Dean can't resist the instinct to protect her, especially when it becomes apparent there's a killer in their town.

Their former chemistry soon reignites, but Malorie has long accepted that her dark family secret has destined her to a life alone. And when she uncovers evidence that makes her the killer's target, a deadly confrontation threatens to destroy any possibility of a second chance.

"The suspense of who-done-it leaves you on the edge of your seat.  If you enjoy a romantic suspense that plays with your mind while the romance tugs at your heart, Dangerous Currents needs to be on your TBR list!" ~  Forget the Housework, I'm Reading (5*s)

"I'm a huge Romantic Suspense fan, and I must admit, Dangerous Currents kept me guessing until the very end.  Malorie and Dean are addictive to read...The second chance romance lit up my e-reader.  Talk about intense!  I started reading and couldn't stop...yes, it was that good!  Highly recommend." ~ N.N. Light's Book Heaven (5*s)

"Ms. Knight knows how to bring her characters to life!  We are invited into their heads, their hearts, to hear their thoughts, feel their fears...The tension that runs through Kathryn Knight's words, each page and scene, is razor sharp.  I love a story where I can honestly say 'I didn't see THAT coming!'  A second chance at romance, layers of suspense...priceless reading!" ~ Tome Tender Book Blog (5*s)

History of #Christmas Traditions: #StNick, Reindeer, + Trees #ChristmasEve #MerryChristmas

The writer in me loves looking into the origins of our holidays and celebrations, so for the Christmas season, I'm dedicating this post to St. Nick, reindeer, and the decorating of trees.  As usual with my origins/history posts, I'll do my disclaimer that I'm an author, not a historian, but I'm used to doing thorough research for my novels!

Obviously, St. Nick is a well-known figure associated with the Christmas holiday.  While most people are familiar with the story of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, though, many are unaware of how a 4th century Bishop influenced the legend of Santa Claus.

St. Nicholas of Myra
Saint Nicholas, or Nikolaos of Myra, was a bishop in an ancient town in Lycia--now Demre, in the Antalya Province of Turkey. One of his most well-known deeds involved giving unexpected gifts, one of which landed in a stocking.  In the story, Nicholas wanted to help three young girls, whose father had no money for their dowries.  At that point in history, such a fate would result in a life of prostitution. Not wanting to embarrass the poor father, Nicholas threw bags of gold coins through the windows.  In one version of the tale, the father laid in wait to discover who was doing this...and so instead of throwing the third bag through the window, Nicholas dropped it down the chimney, and it landed in a stocking hung to dry by the fire.

Sinterklaas rides
a white horse
The Dutch figure of Sinterklass is based upon Saint Nick, and he more resembles the white-bearded man in red we're all familiar with. In turn, our Santa Claus is derived from Sinterklass, and it's widely believed that he was introduced to North America around the time of the Revolutionary War, by inhabitants of New York City, which was once New Amsterdam, a Dutch colony.

Of course, many other sources have combined to shape both the modern-day image of Santa Claus and the various legends and traditions which have evolved.  For example, what about the sled pulled by reindeer?

That brings us back to NYC, and the 1823 poem by Clement Clarke Moore--A Visit From St. Nicholas ('Twas the Night Before Christmas).  The names of eight flying reindeer are listed, and they are portrayed pulling a sleigh full of gifts, landing on rooftops so St. Nick can deliver toys.  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was added to the mix in 1939, when Robert L. May created the story of the leader of the reindeer team in a booklet distributed as a Christmas promotion by Montgomery Ward.

The tradition of decorating trees is more difficult to pin down in terms of specific dates and regions.  I remember learning in a college class (a LONG time ago, but it stuck with me...) how certain pagan rituals became entwined with Christian celebrations.  The professor discussed how in ancient times, people often believed their actions could influence the future, so decorating trees that mysteriously stayed green throughout the dark winter with fruit and berries could help produce a plentiful spring harvest.  What I've read online supports this theory, and it is known that historically people used greenery to decorate during the winter months, both as symbols of life and as festive decorations for celebrations.  Most sources agree the modern practice of putting up a Christmas tree and decorating it can be traced back to 16th century western Germany.  The idea of evergreen trees representing everlasting life dovetails with the Christian celebration of Jesus's birth.

The holidays can be such a busy time, and I'm hoping my blog readers who celebrate Christmas have some time to relax and enjoy the magic of the season.  And if you need a book to help you de-stress, check out one of my novels - each one is filled with romance, mystery, and suspense - something for everyone! Also perfect as a last-minute gift, since all you need to send someone a Kindle copy is an email address. Each one is less that the price of a card (Dangerous Currents is actually on sale right now for just 99c on Kindle)!

My happy place!

Thanks for stopping by, and Happy Holidays!

Holiday #Recipe ~ Rosemary Nut Mix #homemade #gifts #HappyHolidays #amblogging #food

I am not a crafty person.  I’m creative, in terms of dreaming up plot twists and developing characters, but the closest I usually get to designing gorgeous gifts or beautiful centerpieces is adding pictures I love with instructions I probably can’t follow to my Pinterest boards.  I’m in awe of people who have that kind of talent.

But I can follow simple recipes—emphasis on simple—and a few years ago, my sister-in-law, who always hosts Christmas with a dazzling display of gourmet foods and stunning decorations, served a nut mix that I just couldn’t get enough of.  And hey, it’s nuts—a good-for-you food, packed with protein, omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.  Even with the seasonings, it’s a healthy choice compared to most baked treats.

So I asked her for the recipe, and now around the holidays, I make huge batches to share with friends and family.  It’s both spicy and sweet, and—warning—highly addictive.  I buy cute jars with chalkboard labels to package them in and add little tags with a personal note.  If you’d like to give it a try, please find the recipe below!

2 ½ cups of assorted unsalted nuts.  I use cashews, almonds, walnuts, and pecans.
2 T fresh rosemary, coarsely chopped
½ t cayenne pepper.  Use less or leave out if you’re averse to spicy.
2 t dark brown sugar
2 t sea salt
1 T unsalted butter, melted
Spread the nuts on a baking sheet and cook for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.  Mix the remaining ingredients.  Toss the nuts with the mixture in a large bowl.  Enjoy!

A jar of these would make a great gift, maybe even paired with a book!  Reading is a proven stress-reliever, and we can all use that during the busy holiday season.  It’s easy to gift an e-book to someone via email, and it often costs less than the price of a card!  My latest novel is The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, a ghost mystery/romantic suspense that recently won the RONE Award at InD’Tale Magazine for Best Paranormal 2019!  This title was also named Best Romantic Suspense of 2018 by N.N. Light’s Book Heaven Reviews, one of the Top 3 Best Books of 2019 at Read Free.ly, and a Top 40 Pick of the Best Paranormal Romances of all time at Reedsy.  If you--or readers on your list--enjoy some spooky suspense mixed with romance, please check out the blurb below!  (This title along with others also available as an audio book!)

A dangerous ghost brings them together...
but will they survive long enough to find happiness?

After tragedy strikes, Callie Sinclair is left with a gift she never wanted—the ability to communicate with ghosts. But when a desperate widow begs for her help, she reluctantly agrees to investigate the strange occurrences at Hillwood Farm. She quickly realizes she’s dealing with a dangerous presence beyond anything she’s ever experienced, and something else becomes equally clear—the only other living person in the house, Mrs. Turner’s handsome grandson, thinks she’s a scam artist. While she’d prefer to just ignore him, her heart beats a little faster every time he’s nearby.

Luke Turner doesn’t believe in spirits. He’s moved back to restore the family farm, but living on the property serves a dual purpose—he can watch out for his grandmother. He’s not happy about the sudden appearance of a self-described psychic, or his inexplicable attraction to her. His initial suspicions crumble as evidence points to an actual haunting, but he’s still determined not to fall for Callie—the past has taught him it’s best to avoid relationships.

As Callie is drawn deeper into the mystery, she becomes the target of a vengeful spirit, and Luke can no longer fight his feelings for her. Unable to resist their desire, passion ignites…even as the paranormal activity escalates to a final deadly confrontation.

I'm a Featured Favorite Author on A #Soccer Mom's #Book Blog! #soccermom #reviews

Excited my pub made a few small changes
to the original cover, including adding
my new USA TODAY Bestseller status!
When my first novel, Silver Lake, came out in August of 2012, I didn't sleep for a week.  What would my friends and family think of my debut novel?  Would anyone else want to read it, beyond people I knew?  Would any book bloggers or review sites select it for review, and if they did, what would they say?  After spending 3 and 1/2 years writing, revising, and submitting to publishers, it was nerve-wracking to put something I'd worked so hard on out into the world...but I wrote it to hopefully entertain readers--and that's still why I write--so I knew I just had to cross my fingers and let my publisher offer it up for review.

Silver Lake has gone on to hit the #1 Bestseller spot on Amazon on
several occasions!

So when I actually received an email from a reviewer currently reading the book, saying how much she was enjoying it, I was overjoyed.  Some of my favorite quotes from her 5-star review of Silver Lake are below  :)

"Every character in Silver Lake is perfectly developed.  The ghost of Brandy gave me chills many times.  By the end of the story, I felt like I had been at the lake house with them all.  I could not put this book down.  Romance, drama, renewal of friendships, and ghosts…something for everyone.  I cannot wait to see what Kathryn Knight writes next."

Since 2012, I've written 5 more novels, and I've always submitted them for review to this reviewer's site, A Soccer Mom's Book Blog.  I'm so honored that this month, she decided to feature me and my novels as part of her Holiday posts dedicated to her favorite books, favorite authors, and books she can't forget about!  These are her recommended reads for gift purchases, and I'm so excited to be on the list.

Visit her post here, and if you enjoy Romantic Suspense, Ghost Mysteries, and Paranormal Romance, I hope you'll check out some of my books!  Sending an e-book is often less than a card, with no shipping or packaging required.  Plus, reading is a proven stress-reducer, so treating yourself to a new read is a good way to deal with the hectic holiday season.  Thanks for stopping by and Happy Holidays!

ahhh...bliss
