Historic Stony Brook Grist Mill in Brewster, MA

Like many people, I am struggling to stay positive during this time of isolation and find fun things to do to keep my family active and get us out of the house (safely, where there are no crowds) when possible.  The weather here on Cape Cod has not been particularly cooperative, but a few weekends ago we had a beautiful Sunday, and the four of us took a trip to explore some trails in Brewster, a town further out along the bent arm of the Cape.  If you picture the bent arm, the bridges from mainland Massachusetts are near the shoulder, and Provincetown is up at the curved hand.  Brewster is along the bay side of the peninsula, between the "bicep" and the inside of the elbow.

Since we were not in a hurry, we took the scenic route...6A. (Sidebar...the faster way is via Rt. 6, which is a highway that runs continuously across the U.S. from Bishop, CA to Provincetown, MA.  A bucket list trip!)  Route 6A is also known as the Old King's Highway, which makes me think of Game of Thrones.  It definitely offers amazing history, with buildings, homes, churches, and cemeteries dating back to the 1600s, and Native American sites going back much further.  One of my novels, Haunted Souls, incorporates a ghost mystery that begins in the Old Jail, which is the oldest wooden jailhouse in the entire country, built circa 1690 and found along 6A in Barnstable Village.

It was a beautiful drive, with farms, old stone walls, blooming trees and flowers, cranberry bogs, and kettle ponds.  When we arrived in Brewster, we headed to a trail known as the Eddy Bay Trail, as the land was once owned by the Eddy family.  The trail loops through the woods with a gradual climb to the highest bluff in Brewster.  From there is a breathtaking view of the Cape Cod Bay.  In the distance, you can see the land mass of Providence, RI on one side and Provincetown, MA on the other.

From there, we headed over to the Stony Brook Grist Mill, which is the sole remaining structure from the 19th century Factory Village in Brewster.  The museum inside the restored mill was closed, of course, but we enjoyed the trails along the brook and the herring run.  The herring, known as alewives, make their way from the bay, up through Stony Brook with help from a series of ladders, to return to the freshwater ponds where they were born so they can spawn.  It's an incredible and dangerous journey, and a sign of spring here.

It was a wonderful day and an amazing opportunity to explore some areas that we rarely see, since it is often human nature to forget about the treasures we have in our own "backyard".  We've lived here over 20 years, and there is still so much we haven't seen!  Since many of my novels are set on Cape Cod, I do try to spend a lot of time visiting the area I'm considering as a setting, and I often use pieces of Cape history as inspiration for my stories.  If you'd like to virtually visit some of the other towns or landmarks I've blogged about, check out Visiting Truro (setting for my latest release, Ghost Moon), Visiting Falmouth, and Exploring Bourne Farm (inspiration for The Haunting of Hillwood Farm).

Exploring #Bourne Farm for Inspiration #amwriting #Ghosts #CapeCod #Falmouth #Travel

Bourne Farm, or Crowell-Bourne Farm, circa 1775

You wouldn't think a ghost mystery would require much research--part of the fun of writing paranormal elements is using your imagination.  But I've had to do research for every one of my books...some more than others.  Haunted Souls, in particular, took a huge amount of research.  The initial inspiration for that story came from a visit to the Old Jail here on Cape Cod--the oldest wooden jailhouse in the country, built circa 1690 and reputedly haunted.  For this particular plot, historical research was necessary, and also a great deal of research into the military background of one of the characters, who was an EOD tech (Explosive Ordinance Disposal).  You can read more details about the Old Jail in Barnstable Village and researching EOD in this post.

For my recent ghost mystery/romance, The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, I needed more information on historic farms located on Cape Cod.  The farm in my novel has been in the Turner family for generations, and Luke Turner is determined to save the property from development, despite financial struggles.  So I visited a few farms in person in addition to doing online research.

Crowell-Bourne Farm (in West Falmouth on Cape Cod in MA) probably served as the biggest inspiration, at least in terms of my vision for the landscape of Hillwood Farm.  The house was built in 1775 by Joseph Crowell, as you can see from the plaque on the building in the top photo.  Although there is no documentation to prove it, local lore says the structure on Bourne Farm was one of the first seven houses in West Falmouth.  This property is now owned by a private land trust, and consists of 49 acres of fields and woodlands.  It's listed on the National Registration of Historic Places, and visitors enjoy walking the miles of trails through the woods and appreciating the views.  We picked some apples from the orchards during our walk, and I'm sharing a few more pics below.

One other farm we visited was Taylor-Bray Farm in Yarmouth Port.  This farm was originally settled in 1639 when the area was still part of the Plymouth Colony.  I used some of the history of this farm as inspiration--specifically, Taylor-Bray was a working farm until 1941, harvesting hay and selling fruit.  The existing farm house there now was built in the late 1800s, and visitors are allowed to walk through when it's open.  The decor has been preserved, but in my mind's eye, my fictional farm house has had quite a lot of renovations throughout the years.

While these two farms are now historic landmarks open to the public, there are a number of working farms on the Cape that still house families.  Those I researched online, or visited their produce stands to enjoy the fresh fruits and veggies!

All in all, this research was a fascinating look at some Cape Cod history, as well as inspiration for the setting.  But then my imagination took over.  Who is haunting Hillwood Farm?  And why?  You'll have to read the book to find out!  It's available on Kindle and paperback on Amazon, just follow the link below to read the blurb.

I'm thrilled to be teaching a new "Fiction Writing and Publication" course this September, back at The Lawrence School in Falmouth.  For the last few years, I've taught this popular class for both Cape Cod Community College's Center for Corporate and Professional Education and for the Town of Falmouth's Community School in a number of locations, and I've met so many aspiring authors and hopefully helped them on their writing journey.  I've even read some of their finished manuscripts and visited their writing groups, which has been so rewarding.  If you're interested in writing a novel, or exploring publishing options, and you're in the Cape Cod area, consider joining us!  The press release is below, along with sign-up info and some reviews from class attendees!

A course offered this fall in Falmouth provides instruction on writing fiction and guidance on publishing options.

For many writers, a quote by Nobel Prize-Winning Author Toni Morrison summarizes the beginning of the journey: “If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”  Many people dream of writing a novel, but aren’t sure how to begin.  Even once a manuscript is finished, the choices within the publishing industry seem to grow every day.  Literary agents continue to seek clients for the big publishing houses, smaller electronic presses have become a force in the new digital world, and more options than ever exist for those looking to publish independently.  Unfortunately, this type of growth has also resulted in many sites looking to take advantage of authors eager to publish and promote their work.  The entire process can become overwhelming quickly.

A five-week evening class offered by Falmouth Community School aims to offer guidance to aspiring authors.  “Fiction Writing and Publication” will be held at the Lawrence School on Tuesday evenings, September 25—October 23, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  #1 Amazon and B&N Bestselling Author Kathryn Knight will teach the elements of successful fiction writing and outline the various options in the rapidly changing publishing industry.  Key concepts such as voice, POV, the hook, Goal-motivation-conflict, and character development will be discussed. Idea inspiration, common pitfalls, and query letters will also be covered.  Finally, avenues to publication - from self-publishing to small and digital presses to seeking agent representation - will be explored.

Lawrence School is located at 113 Lakeview Ave.  Pre-registration is required; please visit Falmouth Community School online or call 508.548.5739 to register.  Cost is $149, no materials or experience needed.

My #Books on Display in #Falmouth + A Signing Event ~ #CapeCod Beach Reads

This week, a local bank is highlighting my novels, with a big display table in their lobby!  I’m so thrilled at this chance to have more people learn about my novels, and the community support provided by Rockland Trust in Falmouth is truly appreciated.  Three of my novels are set on Cape Cod—the #1 Amazon and B&N Bestseller GULL HARBOR , award-winning military romance + ghost mystery HAUNTED SOULS and my brand new release, DANGEROUS CURRENTS, a steamy second-chance romance filled with secrets and suspense.  Both locals and visitors to the area will enjoy “seeing” some of the unique places on the Cape throughout the story, and these are all page-turning beach reads with plenty of twists.

It's the perfect season for love stories!
